Good for her!!
80-year-old woman completes annual 600-mile trek with her pony and dog
While most of the world slows down, Jane sets off
Every autumn since 1972, Jane has ridden from her home near Hexham, Northumberland, all the way to Inverness in the Scottish Highlands—a journey of nearly 600 miles (965km). And she hasn’t just done it once… she’s done it every single year for over five decades.
No luxury. No support team.
Just her pony, Diamond, her little Jack Russell Dinky, and the open road.
She covers around 15–20 miles a day, carrying everything she needs in saddlebags—her tent, food, and a few essentials. Her diet is simple: porridge, oatcakes, cheese. Her phone is old-school and barely used. Nights are spent under the stars. Days are guided by instinct, experience, and the steady rhythm of hoofbeats.
The journey usually takes around seven weeks, winding through quiet country lanes, forests, and villages where people now recognise her. Over the years, Jane hasn’t just travelled a route—she’s built a moving network of friendships, stopping to visit people she’s met along the way. For many, her arrival has become part of the year.
Even with impaired vision, often wearing an eye patch, Jane refuses to stop. The challenges—weather, fatigue, rough terrain—are simply part of the experience. And through it all, Diamond has been her constant, a calm, trusted partner who has carried her through every mile. Alongside them, Dinky rides faithfully in the saddlebags, completing this unlikely but inseparable trio.
But what makes Jane Dotchin’s story so powerful isn’t just the distance… it’s the consistency.
Year after year.
Decade after decade.
She keeps going.
Not for records. Not for attention.
But because she loves the journey.
In a world obsessed with speed, comfort, and shortcuts, Jane’s life is a quiet reminder of something deeper:
👉 You don’t need much to live fully
👉 Age doesn’t decide when you stop
👉 And sometimes, the simplest path is the richest one
One woman. One pony. One dog. Over 50 years of adventure.
