Don Julio is a young horse that we have raised. He is a Gypsy Quarter Horse cross gelding that we are riding with the end goal of offering him for sale as a trail riding partner.
Don has been a great student and a smart and willing c**t! Lee is doing the riding on him, after we had a really talented young guy put the 1st 60 days on him.
Here’s the point of this post. Don has done really well- goes anywhere, over logs, up hills, through ditches and will still lope a circle and stop pretty. We were just talking about him and thinking he might be ready for someone to come ride- we’ve had several people ask about him. We don’t want to offer him for sale until he’s solid and ready for someone else, we were thinking he might be getting close. And then the wire happened!! 😬 if I was a good videographer I would have a video for you but take my word for it- he flipped sh*t! This level headed easy going 4 year old absolutely swallowed his head!!! Thank goodness Lee is still sticky! The knowledge that hitting the ground was going to hurt for a really long time probably helped him stay in the middle as well! 😂 as soon as he picked up his right rein Don stopped and got his head together, but the point is, we found his hole 🕳️, Lee has a lot of time on him, but that was something out of left field! Spending the time on these young horses outside of the arena really gets them solid and lets you find out what you need to work on!
Needless to say the next ride was back to the training pen! Ropes around the feet, leading by a foot- stopping when he gets something around his legs! Then it was back out to the pasture to face the demon wire! When Lee came riding back in, he had a wad of smooth wire hanging off his saddle and was just walking along like he’d been dragging wire his whole life!
So- that little deal could have been a big deal for the rest of Don Julio’s life, luckily A:Lee is handy! and B:the hole was found, the mischief was managed and he is still on track to be an amazing trail horse!
