🌽 CORN POLLINATION | PART 3

Did something go wrong before, during or after pollination? The ear can actually tell us!

In the final part of our series, Kagan shows us the shake test and explains how the silks and developing kernels leave clues about when pollination problems occurred—and what may have caused them.

🌽 CORN POLLINATION | PART 2

There’s a whole lot more happening in a cornfield than you might think!

The tassel is the male reproductive part of the plant and sheds pollen, while the silks are the female part. Each silk connects to an ovule that, when successfully fertilized, develops into a kernel of corn.

But just like reproduction throughout nature, conditions have to be right. Heat can affect the timing and viability of pollen, while drought stress can interfere with the silks being exposed and ready to receive it.

And that’s just the beginning of what can go wrong during pollination.

🌽 A corn plant is pretty incredible when you really stop and look at it!

We’re kicking off a multi-part series on corn pollination with Kagan Randolph, Technical Agronomist for DEKALB and Deltapine, to help us understand just how much has to go right to produce an ear of corn.

PART 1: The Pollination Window

Corn only has about a 7–10 day window to pollinate, with the prime time each day around 9–11 AM. When temperatures climb, pollen viability can go from a couple of hours to just a couple of minutes—drastically reducing the chance for successful fertilization.

These machines are pretty impressive to watch—eating their way through the corn and chopping the entire plant into roughly 2-inch pieces of easy-to-eat cow food. 🐄

Marcus is putting some leftover wall insulation to good use in the chick room to help us keep their temperatures a little more controlled.

Maybe someday we’ll have meat birds in the farm stand…

Or maybe we’ll just be chicken sh*ts. 😂🐓
