Picked all our butternut squash before Lala arrives. Will leave out to cure for a week or so then store in our 55 F degree cooler until our next market in September. "Winter squash" are grown in summer but store very well and actually get better after sitting for a while.

Multi-species cover crop July 25th. Mixed buckwheat and sunn h**p seed with "wild bird" seed (has millets and sunflowers). Green Cover seed who we usually buy from seems to have abandoned using USPS so shipping was too much. Trying out bird seed for diversity - seems to work. Like always, we have to cover with netting until seedlings are up to keep birds from eating all the seed. We are a little slow in cover cropping this year - may not get to every field this summer like last year but hope to do beds here and there all year round.

We have lettuce this Saturday 7/25/26.
Last weekend at Kihei Farmer's market until September. We will be re-planting and working on neglected projects until then. August is our equivalent to mainland's "winter" for us.

A green tunnel of cucumber vines and long beans. Long beans just started coming on. Just like cucumbers, these should be picked daily for best quality. Otherwise many would get oversized. Its been almost 2 years since we grew these so its nice to have them back in our own menus. Had pork & long beans with leeks last night. Yum.

Cut back the Puerto Rican Seasoning peppers - they are almost 1 year old plus started being infested with whiteflies. As they grow out again, using teff and bush beans as a cover and quick cash crop. Hopefully this will provide extra photosynthesis and living roots to add sugars to feed the soil microbes. Giving the peppers a boost just like being planted after terminating a cover crop? Will see how it comes out.

Just a peek in High tunnel #2 this Friday 5/8/26. Puerto Rican peppers are still going strong and over our heads. Latest plantings of cherry tomato and slicing tomato on either side with some 'margarita' cucumbers recently planted in front. Cherry tomatoes are just starting to have a few ripen. Slicers will be another month or two.

The Kalo loved all that rain - cucumbers & tomatoes not so much. Too much water = wet feet and disease running rampant on the leaves = loss of production. So thats why not many cucumbers or tomatoes at the market. We have a couple new plantings that we hope will start filling in but will be a few weeks. Fingers crossed the ag irrigation system will be fixed soon so we can start planting again.
