When the demo team helps load the trailer it makes loading the trailer…..take way longer than it needs to! The looks of disappointment when I told them demo’s aren’t until tomorrow though were priceless 🤣

When one of my dogs tells me to follow, I follow. That is part of my responsibilities in this partnership that we have. Usually when I come in the gate with the bucket of dog food the boys bounce around a bit and then gallop straight down the hill to their food bowls, all ready for dinner. Today Cory headed purposefully for the woods, stopped, looked back and waited. I followed. He headed into the woods, stopped, looked back and waited. I followed. I wish I had videoed the first bit but I wasn’t that quick on my feet. Here we pick up where he had run down the hill and was waiting for me by the creek. I have no idea what he was trying to show me in this except that whatever it was he felt it was important for me to know. I honestly think he despairs of my useless nose and poor hearing sometimes. My senses clearly are not up to his standards. Anyway, I did my due diligence, checked the fence line and checked the stock. When he was satisfied that I had done enough he started back up through the woods to start our nightly dinner routine without even waiting for me. And once again, my dogs show me how incredible they truly are.

This dog! This dog is impressing me more and more as he matures and I was pretty impressed to begin with! At just about a year and a half old he is already pretty much plug and play. He can work rowdy young boars, farrowing sows, the adult ewe flock and/or an obnoxious cow or any combination there of. Let me break down why this is such an achievement. Say you learn the piano, you practice and practice and finally you can play almost anything on it. You tell your friend you play music and they say “oh cool play this!” and hand you a violin. You try to explain that you only play the piano but they don’t understand and keep insisting you play them something on the violin. Another person hands you a saxophone and excitedly asks you to play that too. This is what happens to young guardian dogs. Each flock, group and species is a different ‘instrument’ that they must learn to play. And as everyone knows that takes a lot of practice. Some dogs take years to build up their repertoire and some dogs are like those amazing people who can just pick up anything and play it after a little fiddling around. Bru is showing me over and over that he is one of those. He makes some mistakes, hits some wrong notes but he slots into each role so smoothly and seamlessly you almost forget he’s still a puppy sometimes. If this is what he’s shown me already I can’t even imagine what he will show me next!

When it’s 104 degrees outside you just gotta wash a dog to stay cool! Here’s the fabulous Butters who would like the world to know that this is what betrayal looks like. Since he joined the farm he has prided himself on being as filthy as possible at all times, his current favorite hangout is the swamp. He could not believe that I removed all his hard won dirt but he does look absolutely glorious I must say!

It’s heating up fast and one of the most common questions I get is how do the dogs and livestock handle these high temperatures? Well instead of explaining I asked them if they would just show everyone how they stay cool on hot summer days!

Rebecca Miller got to come for a visit last week to see how our boy is growing and got this awesome pic! We’re both so pleased with how this fella is growing and developing both physically and mentally, he is really showing just what careful and thoughtful breeding can do. We love you Bru!
