3 Things That Put Kits on the Butcher Block 🐰 When selecting rabbits to continue your breeding program, it’s important that you’re making sure they’re an improvement… versus a step-back! Though there are often many others, here are three major reasons that a kit may end up on the cull list! 🥩

Humane euthanasia isn’t something we claim based on our personal opinion. It’s actually a protected, descriptive term made by experts in the field who have done ample research and studied each dispatch method in great depth! 🐰

As a breeder, it’s our goal to, not only improve the physical health of our rabbits, but their mental health and temperament as well. Keeping rabbits that bite can be an appealing idea to some, in theory, but the reality is that there are already not enough rabbit owners on the planet for the amount that exist - and certainly not ones who are okay getting their fingers bitten to nubs simply because they’ve reached in the rabbit’s space the wrong way. And, it’s genetic! Animals with bad temperament are aninals that are often constantly stressed, seeing normal human interaction as a threat. If we were to keep an aggressive rabbit in our breeding pool, it would severely negatively impact their offspring in the same way. For those animals, the crockpot or oven is typically the best option.

“If your breeders are so healthy and perfect, why are they producing so many culls? That doesn’t add up.” 🐰 Genetics are very complicated! As much as we strive to choose great, well-structured parent stock, we will inevitably still end up with offspring that don’t meet those same standards. It’s just the luck of the draw! Culls are not a sign of a bad breeder or bad breeding program, but a sign that you’re doing things right! The more culls you have, the more standards your breeding stock must meet to avoid them, and the better your rabbits will be because of it 💚

I will never shut up about the efficiency of meat rabbits. As someone who raises chickens, turkeys, and hogs - rabbits are by far the easiest to maintain from a non-commercial standpoint. So tell me, are meat rabbits in your plans this year? 🐰

“What’s the difference between a meat rabbit and pet rabbit?” 🐰 Everything! …and nothing at all. Whether or not the difference matters to you really just depends on your goals!

“Do you let your meat animals live to old age?” 🐰 Absolutely not! But, it’s not because we don’t care about them. Processing older animals brings a variety of efficiency and meat quality issues. As animals age, their meat toughens, and the variety of cuts you can get from that animal quickly decreases. Whereas a younger animal can be processed and cooked any number of ways, older animals really only have a few options - most being the “lesser” cuts that typically aren’t preferred. And if you wait too long, the meat will be so tough that it’s largely inedible. Add that to the financial inefficiency of feeding them out for that long… and you’d have $40/lb pork that tastes like car tires! There’s a reason that we proces meat stock on a specific timeline, and it’s extremely important that we stick to it! 🐽

True story 😵‍💫 I’ve seen a few other farmers do videos like these and I wanted to jump on the trend. Since I have to deal with these conversations anyways, I may as well get some enjoyment poking fun at their ridiculousness!

PLEASE PUT DOWN YOUR PITCHFORKS 👀

Okay, now that you’ve presumably watched more than the first 10 seconds of the video, you may continue commenting.

I thought about whether or not to make a statement about this, but the sheer bullying unearthed by this situation is just as big a threat to farming and homesteading as any other topic covered on this page.

Creators are real people too.
Their farms and animals aren’t just fake and set up for views.
This isn’t a fantasy world where nothing ever goes wrong.

We’re all out here running our farms to the best of our ability, while trying to help people alongside that, and the horrendous behavior revealed by the community this past week will be the d**th of the authenticity you claim to desire.
