Give your veggie beds a fighting chance this spring and summer.
A strong El Niño is already here and still strengthening. Bureau of Meteorology outlooks point to lower rainfall across parts of southern and eastern Australia this spring and summer, plus hotter days.
For many of us that means hotter, drier conditions heading into summer, exactly when tomatoes, greens and new plantings need consistent moisture.
Biochar is one of the simplest ways to build that resilience into your soil.
Its sponge like pores hold onto rain and irrigation water instead of letting it drain straight through or evaporate. Research and field trials commonly show up to 50% better water holding capacity.
Once it’s in the ground it stays there for hundreds if not thousands of years, supporting microbes, holding nutrients and reducing how often you need to water.
How to use it in garden and veggie beds:
• Mix biochar compost through the top 10–20 cm when preparing new beds or refreshing existing ones.
• The ideal rate is one 15 L bag of our biochar compost per square metre. That’s all you need. No need to reapply!
• If using our raw biochar, mix it with compost or your usual organic matter so the biochar pores get “charged” with biology and nutrients before you apply it.
The earlier you get it in, the more time it has to settle before peak heat.
