Meet Rodney | Spring Vale Wines

Spring Vale has a long history, shaped by family, farming and generations who have called this property home. Rodney, who has quite literally been part of the place his entire life.

Spring Vale has been in Rodney’s family since 1875. He was born on the property and, long before vines became such an important part of Spring Vale, life here was very much about traditional farming. Rodney ran sheep and cattle and grew crops including poppies and grain.

Then, in 1986, he planted the vineyard as part of the farm’s mixed operations. Nearly four decades later, it’s fair to say those vines have become a pretty significant part of the Spring Vale story.

Today, Rodney is a Director and is always providing valuable input and has eased himself into semi retirement. Although we're not entirely convinced that means retirement! You’ll generally find him here a couple of days a week, keeping busy with maintenance or getting stuck into whatever new project is underway.

🍷 His wine of choice? Estate Pinot Noir. But preferably one that’s had at least ten years to mature.

His favourite time of year at Spring Vale is harvest. After watching the vines and fruit develop throughout the year, there’s something particularly satisfying about seeing the fruit finally coming in and discovering what that vintage has produced.

And when Rodney isn't at Spring Vale? He loves travelling with his wife Crystal and spending time with family, with exploring Europe firmly on the wish list.

From mixed farming to planting the first vines in 1986, and now working alongside the next generation of his family, Rodney has certainly seen a few chapters of Spring Vale’s story. And thankfully, he’s still very much part of the next one.

For more than 35 years, Spring Vale has been growing into one of Tasmania’s premium family owned vineyards, built on history, hard work and generations of local knowledge.

The property’s story reaches right back to 1875, when these grounds were sheep pastures long before they became vine rows. Through five generations of the Lyne family, Spring Vale has continued to evolve, with every season and every bottle reflecting persistence, care and a deep connection to place.

When you visit Spring Vale, you’re not just visiting a vineyard you’re stepping into a living family tradition where heritage, hospitality and authenticity are all part of the experience.

Set on Tasmania’s peaceful East Coast, Spring Vale Vineyard is a place where cool breezes, ancient soils and generations of care come together to create something truly special.

Established in 1986, the vineyard transformed historic farmland into thriving vine rows, with varieties carefully chosen to suit the site and its unique coastal conditions. Here, the seasons shape every vintage, and each harvest reflects both the Tasmanian climate and the passion of the Lyne family, whose stewardship is now being carried forward by a new generation.

At Spring Vale, grape growing is hands-on, thoughtful and deeply connected to the land around us.

Fresh, bright and beautifully balanced thats how we like to describe our 2025 Melrose Chardonnay, its a standout of the season.

On the nose, you’ll find layers of stone fruit, citrus blossom, grapefruit and a subtle struck flint complexity. The palate opens with a soft, supple texture before tightening into a crisp, focused finish of freshly zested lemon and mineral acidity.

A Chardonnay that feels both refined and vibrant, and one we’re really proud to share.
Taste and purchase at our Cellar Door, open daily 11am–4pm, or explore online

Spring Vale “Melrose” Pinot Noir is all about Tasmania’s East Coast, it's bright, young, fresh and uncomplicated. Think vibrant aromatics of luscious cherry and wild red forest fruits, with a tempting little lift of clove and vanilla. The palate is supple and fruit driven, packed with rich red and black berries, balanced by elegant tannins and fresh acidity that keeps the finish rolling nicely… right until the next glass is poured.

Grab a bottle through your local bottle shop (or ask for it by name), order via our website, or pop in and see us at the Spring Vale cellar door in Cranbrook, Tasmania.

An update from the pruning team at Spring Vale Wines!

There's plenty happening amongst the rows at the moment, with our hardworking pruning team now around 60% of the way through the vineyard. ✂️

This year's crew is made up of 10 people, including seven fantastic locals and three Italian backpackers 🇮🇹 who have joined the team for the season.

Pruning is such an important part of the vineyard calendar, setting the vines up for the growing season ahead and, eventually, the next vintage. It's careful, hands on work and there's certainly plenty of ground to cover!

A huge effort from the entire team so far. We can't wait to keep you updated as the vines move through the seasons and another vintage begins to take shape.
