Last long weekend of the summer. And it is Fritter Friday Folks. The last good one before we start cutting our orders back. But we don’t just have fritters, we have scones, pound cakes, muffins, squares, breads, hamburger buns, pies, fry pies, tarts. All the healthy stuff you need to end the long weekend right. Maybe you are moving someone off to college. Why not load up on some frozen meals and soups so you know they are eating somewhat healthy. Lots peaches are in and they are getting close to the end of the season so get Ontario produce as long as you can. And we have lots of sweet corn the long weekend. We have two patches coming off together so come and load up. And the fall decor is looking better out front. From mums to pumpkins, gourds and aster we got it. See you all out. Open until 5 today.

Their back just in time for the last long weekend of the summer. You loved them last year when they came in but we only had them in for a month. You loaded up on them as Christmas gifts/ stocking stuffers. We have had people ask if they were returning since we opened in May and we have always planned for them to come back in the fall. Have you figured out what we are talking about? Your feet will feel like you are walking on clouds. Naturally hypoallergenic and softer than traditional wool, these socks deliver a cozy hug your feet deserve from the moment you wake up to the moment you unwind. Alpaca socks. Thedes alpaca socks are back. Yeah. I had a pair last winter and they were amazing. Feet nice and toasty ( and we have no basement in our house so floors do tend to be on the colder side) no sweating in them and oh so soft. So comfy. And not only did they drop off socks but also mittens ( only a couple pairs since it might be a bit early for them because we know when we see them we know winter is around the corner and don’t want you to get too depressed about that) insoles, and drier balls. Did I mention they are oh so soft? Anyways check them out the next time you are in and treat your feet to a luxurious feel, they deserve it.

Hope you all survived the storm yesterday. We had put the mums all away safe and sound but nothing materialized here so they are all back outside for you to come on by and pick a couple up for your long weekend festivities. Not so hot today which is nice. Fresh sourdough breads and focaccia is here for those stating they want to give it a try. First come first serve. New varieties of sourdough breads are Jalapeño and Monterey Jack, Peso Mozzarella, Rosemary Roasted Garlic, Italian Herb and Cheddar and of course the ever popular Cinnamon Raisin. We also have fresh baking from Bauer Baking, spices cakes, muffins, squares, gluten free options. Tarts and carrots cake and fry pies to round out your choices. Yesterday a new shipment of Nuts for cheese cashew dips are in and we thought we would give the cream cheese style spread a try. Everyone seems to like anything dilly so we got lemon dill in. And we are restocked in Pickards potato chips. Dill pickle, Smokey bacon and cheddar, ketchup and the classic. And like always all the amazing produce we always have, and meats and frozen meals, and cheeses and… the list could go on. Open until 5

Looky, looky 👀 . It smells amazing. You guys missed them last week but they are back today, but today only this week. Those amazing sourdough bread and bagels from BakingBreadhouse Clinton. I have not had breakfast yet and the smell of them are making me even hungrier. 😋 Fresh scones and muffins and gluten free baking as well. Don’t let a little heat stop you from coming on in. Maybe you need to pick up a tub of ice cream while here. Or a juicy cantaloupe or basket of peaches. Whatever it is we would love to see you. Open until 5 today.

Happy hot, hot, hot September 1st. Anyone else stepped outside this morning and went “ today is not going to be a good day?” Paul and I definitely sweated out a few gallons of water today, at least it sure felt like it. We worked away and got a bunch of bins of pumpkins in today. Still lots to go still and we have most of the what we picked in the shed. The thing I hate about pumpkin season is pricing. Trust me Paul heard me say a few times, “ I hate this”. Which size of pumpkin goes in which pile. Paul and I had a few “discussions” about which pumpkin goes where. And of course some pumpkins got moved a few times so that did not help in this weather. We are partially set up with gourds, pumpkins etc. but by 4:00 I said heck with it, it is too hot and it is only September 1st lots of time to get them out. So you will see half displays out, not what I like but it is what it is. Next to get the prices out. Paul did our yearly fall trip south yesterday and filled our trailer ( trust me he had it packed we had to be careful opening the doors or things were falling out) with some gorgeous fall planters, plants etc. We have nice big tri-,color mums, no color showing yet, gorgeous 16 inch mixed planters, mum planters with grass, ten inch asters are back, beautiful 10 inch purple fountain grass and so much more. Check out our greenhouse as most is in there now. Labour Day is this weekend, come and grab some fall planters to get you in the mood for autumn.

We are back open tomorrow ( Wednesday) from 10-5 and the sourdough breads and bagels will be back along with scones, muffins and more. All our great produce like always. And so much more. Have a great sleep, if you can.

We have no award winning pumpkins here but to imagine them growing 50’pounds a day is interesting.

Two pounds an hour.

That is the growth rate of a champion pumpkin in the hottest weeks of the season, which works out to about fifty pounds between one sunrise and the next. Growers say you can sit beside one on a warm night and hear the rind creak and tick as it stretches.

The machinery is simple. A pumpkin is more than ninety percent water, and the vine works like a fire hose, pumping water and sugar into the fruit around the clock. Peak flow happens in the dark, which is why growers measure in the morning.

The giants at the fall fairs top two thousand pounds now. Every ounce of it came down one green vine no thicker than your wrist.

Your jack-o-lantern out back runs the same equipment, just on a garden hose instead. 🎃

So just a little question for you sourdough lovers on this rainy afternoon. Heart and Home Microbakery has started to make focaccia. Would anyone be interested in giving it a try this week. They are $10. You have been loving their breads, (we actually had three new flavours on Friday which we never even posted about but all sold out by 12;30ish). They should be back Thursday this week along with Saturday. Baking Bread will be back Wednesday with her sourdough breads and bagels. If there is some interest I will order a few and it will be a first come first serve basis.

We have had a huge problem with these hornworms in our tomato hoop house this year. At least half of our crop we will loose. So sometimes the field tomatoes are ours and some we have been buying in. Next year will be better, every farmers says.

There is a particular sound a gardener makes on finding the first one. Half the tomato plant stripped overnight, and there, thick as a finger and green as the leaves it ate, the tomato hornworm. Most of them are dead ten seconds later. Squashed, drowned, flung over the fence.

Here is what the flinging hand does not know. That worm is halfway to being one of the most astonishing animals your garden hosts. Left alone, it becomes the five-spotted hawkmoth, a heavy dusk flier that hovers in front of flowers on a blur of wings and drinks on the wing. People see one at the nicotiana at twilight and swear they saw a hummingbird. The moth works the night shift the bees leave empty, and the deep-throated flowers, the moonflowers and four-o-clocks, depend on it.

The tomatoes still need defending. So pick the worm off and walk it to a w**d patch instead of the bird bath. And if you find one wearing little white cocoons like grains of rice, leave it exactly where it is. Those are braconid wasps finishing a job you want finished.

The monster eating your tomatoes is a hummingbird in the making. Fling accordingly. 🍅

I am finding some fascinating facts about these tiny creatures lately on this page I wanted to share. Could you imagine if our cheeks could stretch three times the width of our head.

By the time she reaches the stone wall her cheeks are already full, and she is not done. A chipmunk's cheek pouches stretch to three times the size of her head. Twelve acorns to a load. Around 165 acorns moved in a single good day.

All of it goes down a hole you have probably never noticed, into a pantry chamber dug below the frost line. She will doze on top of her groceries all winter, waking every few days to eat in the dark.

Watch the base of your feeder or the oak drip line this week. The freckled blur making trip after trip is packing a root cellar for one. 🍂

Good morning. What do you think the most common question we get is now? How much longer for sweet corn? I know many of the smaller road side stands are closing up shop soon, they try and hit the busier season only. But for us this is part of our living, how we pay the bills not just a side hustle so we try and have it as early and as late as we can. So that being said, have no fear, we are just over half way through our corn. We still have lots, maybe too much for the fall but you guys have been loving it and you got to get it while you can. You can’t get tired of corn yet. We said there might be a slight gap between two varieties because of days to maturity but hopefully if we do it will be during our self serve days. Oh by the way self serve is all set up for today. Have a fabulous Sunday.
