Why are Point of Lay hens so expensive?

Hidden costs people don't see, based on purchasing unsexed, Buff Orpington day old chicks.

Even when buying the "less" expensive chicks, the cost of the feed, and care for birds that turn out to be roosters, has to be factored in.

For example
10 unsexed chicks @ $13 each, $130
Cost of feed for 8- 10 weeks until they can be sexed, $10 per bird = $23 each in cost
5 birds end up being cockerals, so now you're talking about 5 birds to take to point of lay.

So at the low end
$13 to purchase
$130 to feed to 10 weeks
Total $143 ÷ 10 = $26 cost for 10 birds

But....
5 are roosters
Total $143 ÷5 = $52 cost for each hen, before you feed them for another 9 weeks to actual POL, and I haven't factored that in, which brings it to about $60 per Hen.

Plus electricity, time, medical care, and infrastructure...

On Hatchmere Farm we see animals start their lives. Whether they start out here, or join us later, our beautiful creatures make up this farm, and have a part in our everyday life.
But, this is a farm, and a farm has a function. Today is a hard reality, because we love and care for all of our livestock, and because it's time to "send them".
Since their arrival last November from Muckers Farm in Sayward. They've made us laugh, made us crazy, and of course, they've got us dirty, and most of all, they've been a joy. These 3 guys are loved.
Its a farm, you tell yourself, but that doesn't mean you don't get attached, you just know the reality, and today is that day, and yes, I'm crying.
