Roslin Poultry Ranch

Roslin Poultry Ranch We are not a hatchery but a small family farm focusing on quality, not quantity.

We have a very small flock of just a few different breeds and hybrids of chickens that allows us to specialize in egg colours from happy healthy hens.

πŸ” **THE SILENT KILLER IN YOUR COOP: Fatty Liver Hemorrhagic Syndrome**

Have you ever lost a chicken suddenly and wondered how it could have happened when she seemed completely healthy?

One possibility that backyard chicken keepers don't talk about enough is **Fatty Liver Hemorrhagic Syndrome (FLHS).**

A hen can appear healthy, active, and completely normal while excessive fat is accumulating in her liver. In severe cases, the liver can become fragile and hemorrhage or rupture, resulting in **sudden internal bleeding and death.**

And here's something I really want backyard chicken keepers to understand:

**A chicken does not need to look obviously overweight for fatty liver problems to be developing.**

One of the biggest risk factors we can influence is **what and how much we feed.**

Scratch grains, cracked corn, mealworms, treats, table scraps, and even foods that we consider β€œhealthy” can add calories and displace the complete feed that was formulated to provide the balanced nutrition our chickens require.

And please don't feel that you need to **fatten your chickens for winter.** A healthy chicken does not need to build up extra body fat to stay warm.

I've written a new blog that goes much deeper into **Fatty Liver Hemorrhagic Syndrome, obesity, treats and extras, nutrition, body condition, winter feeding, activity, and prevention.**

I've also created a **45-page Fatty Liver Syndrome: Prevention & Management Reference Guide** specifically for backyard chicken keepers.

The guide goes into much greater detail, including:

βœ”οΈ Why fat builds up in the liver
βœ”οΈ Why backyard hens are at risk
βœ”οΈ Treats, scratch & table scraps
βœ”οΈ Recognizing an overweight or overconditioned chicken
βœ”οΈ Why sudden death can occur

βœ”οΈ Supporting liver health
βœ”οΈ What NOT to do

πŸ” **BACKYARD CHICKEN WORKSHOP β€” I’D LOVE YOUR INPUT!**

A couple of weeks ago, I shared a short survey asking if there would be interest in a **Backyard Chicken Workshop**, and I received some great responses!

Since we’re now coming out of the summer vacation season, I thought I’d share it one more time in case some of you missed it while you were away. 😊

I’m considering putting together a hands-on, practical workshop for backyard chicken keepers β€” covering the things that are most useful to know **before a problem happens**.

Based on the responses so far, **parasites and building a chicken emergency kit** are two topics that are getting a lot of interest. But the workshop topics aren't set in stone β€” **your responses will help determine what we cover.**

Some of the things we could potentially discuss include:
πŸ” Recognizing common health problems
πŸͺ± Parasites and how to identify them
🩹 What to keep in a chicken emergency kit
πŸ’Š Understanding common poultry medications and treatments
πŸ₯š Nutrition and feeding
🏠 Coop care and prevention
🚨 What to do when something suddenly goes wrong

If you keep backyard chickens β€” whether you're brand new to chickens or have been keeping them for years β€” **I'd love to know what YOU would want to learn.**

The survey only takes a few minutes to complete:

πŸ“’ **I'm Thinking About Offering Backyard Chicken Workshops!**

Over the past few years, I've had the opportunity to help so many backyard chicken keepers through my blogs, Facebook posts, and one-on-one conversations. It has me thinking... would there be interest in small, in-person educational workshops at Roslin Poultry Ranch?

I'm considering offering workshops this **September and/or October** for small groups (approximately 6 people per session) where we can discuss practical chicken care, nutrition, health, and flock management in a relaxed setting with plenty of time for questions.

Before I begin planning, I'd love your feedback!

πŸ” If you have 2–3 minutes, please complete my short survey:

πŸ‘‰ https://forms.gle/xTFMy1Cp7j9T2Tgz9

Whether you're interested in attending, would prefer online learning, or simply enjoy my educational content, your feedback will help me decide whether to move forward.

The location of the workshop would be in Roslin,Ontario.

Thank you so much for your support! ❀️

✨ A new sign for a new chapter at Roslin Poultry Ranch! ✨

After years of growing our little farm, educating backyard chicken keepers, and helping families raise healthier flocks, it feels pretty special to finally have our name proudly displayed at the farm.

Roslin Poultry Ranch is more than just a place to purchase chicks, pullets, hatching eggs, and poultry wellness products. It is a place where education comes first β€” helping chicken keepers understand nutrition, flock health, and proper care so they can feel confident raising their birds.

From our first hatch to our growing farm store, every step has been built with passion, dedication, and a love for poultry.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our journey, shared our posts, purchased from us, asked questions, and trusted us with your flocks. We truly appreciate every one of you. πŸ”β€οΈ

Welcome to Roslin Poultry Ranch!

The sign is up.....and it finally feels official!!

πŸ₯šβ˜€οΈ Have you noticed a decline in egg production over the last couple of days because of the heatwave?

I definitely have! The girls are feeling the heat, and it’s not uncommon for hens to slow down on laying when temperatures rise. Their bodies are working harder to stay cool, and egg production can temporarily drop.

Even with the heat, my girls still managed to give me some beautiful speckles yesterday! πŸ”πŸ€Ž

I couldn’t resist sharing these gorgeous eggs in the basket. Nature always finds a way to surprise us. πŸ₯šβœ¨

Have your hens slowed down laying this week? Share your egg counts below β€” I’d love to hear how everyone’s flocks are handling the heat!

As difficult as it is, it's time to retire one of the foundation birds from our breeding program.

πŸ“ **Whiting True Blue Rooster – FREE**
This handsome fellow has been the cornerstone of our Whiting True Blue breeding pen for the past **two years**. He's healthy, active, and has done an excellent job, but it's time for me to bring in a younger rooster to continue improving my breeding program. I'd love to see him go to a great home where he can continue doing what he does best.

πŸ” **Whiting True Blue Cross Hen – FREE**
This hen came from the same group as the rooster when I originally purchased them. She is **not a true Whiting True Blue**, as she lays a cream-coloured egg. A few months ago, I believe she experienced a reproductive issue and I haven't seen her lay since. She is otherwise healthy, active, and shows no signs of illnessβ€”I just want to be transparent about her laying history.

πŸ«’ **Two Olive Egger Hens – $25 each**
These one-year-old hens have been housed beside the Whiting True Blues (not in the same pen). They're healthy, active, and ready to join a new flock.

If you're interested, please send me a message to arrange a pickup day and time.

🌑️ **Ontario is in the middle of one of the hottest stretches of weather we've seen this season**, with temperatures reaching **35°C** and feeling closer to **45°C** in many areas.

While we often worry about keeping our chickens warm in winter, **extreme heat can actually be far more dangerous.** Chickens cannot sweat, wear insulating feathers year-round, and have a normal body temperature of around **41.7Β°C (107Β°F)**. It doesn't take long for heat stress to become a life-threatening emergency.

In my latest blog, I cover:
πŸ” Why chickens struggle in hot weather
πŸ’¨ Early signs of heat stress
🚨 How to recognize heat stroke
πŸ’§ What to do in an emergency
🌳 Practical ways to keep your flock safe during a heat wave
⚠️ Why common "cooling treats" aren't the answer

Whether you have a few backyard hens or a larger flock, I hope this guide helps you keep your birds healthy during this extreme weather.

If you know someone with chickens, please share this postβ€”it may help save a bird's life. Stay cool and keep checking on your flocks! β€οΈπŸ“

Chickens are often seen as hardy, adaptable animals, but when it comes to high temperatures, they are actually at a disadvantage. While many backyard keepers worry most about winter, hot weather can be far more dangerous to a flock than cold.Chickens are not built to handle extreme hot weather. They...
