🍂 **Is your chicken looking a little rough around the edges?**

Feathers everywhere. Bare patches. Pin feathers popping up. Maybe your normally reliable layer has suddenly stopped laying.

It could be **molt**. And while molting is completely natural, growing an entirely new set of feathers is a BIG nutritional job.

Here's something many chicken keepers don't realize:

🪶 **It's not simply about giving your chickens more protein.**

Feathers are made primarily of keratin, and your chickens need the **right amino acids** to build those new feathers.

And what about all those mealworms that are marketed as the perfect high-protein food for molting chickens?

🎃 **Pumpkin won’t protect your chickens: worms are winning while you wait.**

Every fall, the same advice starts making the rounds in chicken groups:

**“Feed pumpkin seeds—they’ll deworm your chickens naturally!”**

But is there actually evidence behind that claim?

Pumpkin seeds contain compounds that have been studied for potential antiparasitic properties, but that doesn't mean feeding pumpkin will reliably eliminate worms from a chicken.

And there’s another part of the conversation that often gets overlooked…

🐔 **Not all chicken worms are the same.**
🪱 Roundworms are among the most common intestinal worms found in backyard flocks.
💊 Different parasites can require different treatments.
🌱 “Natural” doesn't automatically mean effective.
🥣 And too many treats can actually reduce the amount of nutritionally complete feed your chickens consume.

For Canadian chicken keepers, parasite control can be especially challenging when over-the-counter poultry deworming options are limited and finding a veterinarian who treats backyard chickens isn't always easy.

So what should you actually know about worms, pumpkin, deworming and responsible parasite control?

🐔 **BREEDERS — DID YOU KNOW?**

A **Barred Whiting True Blue hen can be used to create s*x-linked chicks.**

This is something I didn't see many breeders talking about, so I wanted to share what we've been working with here at **Roslin Poultry Ranch**.

Barring is a **s*x-linked gene**, but simply having a barred chicken does **not** mean you will automatically produce s*x-linked chicks.

The breeding combination matters.

When a **properly selected barred hen** is paired with an **appropriate non-barred rooster**, the offspring can show a visible difference between the s*xes at hatch:

🐓 **Male chicks → barred**

🐥 **Female chicks → non-barred**

That means the chicks can potentially be **s*x identified at hatch by their appearance**, rather than waiting weeks to determine which are cockerels and which are pullets.

And this is where I find the **Barred Whiting True Blue** particularly interesting for breeders.

You're not just working with barring.

You're also working with **blue-egg genetics** and the **pea-comb advantage** associated with those genetics.

So you have the potential to combine:

🔵 Blue-egg genetics
🐔 Pea comb
🖤 Barring
🐣 Sex-linked breeding potential

I've been working with these genetics in my own breeding program, and over the next few weeks I'm going to share more about **how the genetics work, why some barred crosses don't produce s*x-linked chicks, and how a Barred WTB can be used as a breeding tool.**

🌿 **WHAT’S NEW FOR 2027 AT ROSLIN POULTRY RANCH!** 🐔🥚

We’ve been working behind the scenes on some exciting additions to our breeding program, and we’re looking forward to sharing them with you for the 2027 season!

# # # 🍫 BLUE, BLACK & SPLASH COPPER MARANS

For 2027, our Copper Marans program will include **Blue, Black and Splash Copper Marans**.

We’ve also added a new **Blue Copper Marans rooster from French Copper Marans stock**, selected with the breed standard in mind as we continue developing our Marans breeding program.

# # # 🧩 MOSAIC EGGERS™ — NEW FOR 2027!

This one is especially exciting because it is a **multigenerational breeding project created here at Roslin Poultry Ranch.**

The name *Mosaic* reflects how the line is being developed — by bringing together carefully selected genetics from multiple breeding lines, with each generation adding another piece to the bigger picture.

Our goal is to develop unique combinations of **feather colour, egg colour and breeding traits**.

Mosaic Eggers™ have the potential to produce a beautiful range of **green, olive and brown-toned eggs**, with some hens having the potential to lay **naturally speckled eggs**. Egg colour and speckling can vary from hen to hen, and feather colour and pattern can vary from bird to bird.

As this line develops, each generation will be evaluated and selectively bred to refine the qualities that make Mosaic Eggers™ unique.

🌱 **The first Mosaic Egger™ hatching eggs, day old chicks and started pullets will be available in limited quantities in 2027.**

This is just the beginning of the project, and we’re excited to see where these genetics take us over the coming generations!

🐔💙 Meet our 2027 Barred Whiting True Blue breeding rooster!

This handsome boy is the main driver behind our s*x-linked breeding project.

His barred genetics are being used to produce barred females, which will then be paired with our gold-based roosters to produce s*x-linked chicks that can be identified by colour and pattern at hatch. 🐣

There’s a lot of planning and genetics behind what we’re building at Roslin Poultry Ranch, and we’re excited to see where this project takes us in 2027! 💙🥚

🐔 **What a great afternoon at Roslin Poultry Ranch!** 💚

Yesterday was the final scheduled date for my in-person **Backyard Chicken Workshop**, and I couldn't have asked for a better way to wrap things up.

We had **lots of great questions, conversations and sharing of experiences** throughout the afternoon. I really enjoyed being able to connect with other backyard chicken keepers and talk about some of the things that can help us feel more prepared and confident when caring for our flocks.

A big thank you to everyone who attended one of my workshops. It was wonderful meeting you all! 🐔❤️

I've also had some interest from people who aren't within driving distance and would still like to participate.

So... I'm **contemplating the idea of offering this workshop as a Zoom workshop!** 💻

I'm not exactly the most tech-savvy person 😂, so before I make any promises, I want to make sure I can actually deliver a Zoom workshop properly and provide everyone with a good experience.

I'm going to work on figuring out the technology and how I can make the workshop work well in an online format.

**I'll keep you posted!** If I can get it all figured out, it would be a great way to reach backyard chicken keepers who aren't close enough to attend in person.
