🐴 FACT FRIDAY | LIFE IN THE SLOW LANE 🤎

Did you know horses can live well into their 20s and 30s, with some exceptional horses reaching their 40s? 🥹

These two are a perfect example of just how long a horse’s life can be.

Between them, they have over 70 years of life experience — with one in her 30s and the other an incredible 40 years old! 🤯

As horses get older, their needs naturally change. They may need a little more care, attention to their teeth, joints and weight, and sometimes a slightly slower pace of life.

But getting older doesn’t necessarily mean stopping altogether. ❤️

One of these golden oldies is still very much enjoying semi-retirement, heading out for gentle little hacks and enjoying life at a slower pace. 🐴🌿

The other is enjoying full retirement, happily spending his days living his best life out in the field — grazing, snoozing and generally doing as little as possible! 😂

And that’s what we love about having our retired horses and ponies here at Lane End Farm. They all get to enjoy retirement in whatever way suits them best.

Whether that’s a quiet hack or simply spending your days in the field with nothing on the agenda…

they’ve earned every minute of it. 🤎

Because sometimes the best job a horse can have is simply being a horse. 🥹🐴

Not usually one to make negative posts, but I feel like this is something that really needs saying. 🎈

These were found in one of our fields where our livestock graze.

Thankfully, there were no livestock in that particular field at the time. But it really got me thinking about what could have happened if there had been.

Please, please think twice before releasing balloons into the sky. What might seem like a harmless, pretty moment at a party can quite literally end up being a serious danger to livestock and wildlife.

Once a balloon disappears into the sky, you have absolutely no idea where it’s going to land. And unfortunately, that can be straight into a field, hedgerow, river or woodland.

Livestock don’t know the difference between a balloon and something they can safely eat. They can swallow pieces of balloon or the string attached to them, which can cause choking, gut blockages, or become tangled inside the digestive system. It can result in serious illness, surgery or, in the worst cases, death.

And it’s not just cows and sheep. Horses, ponies, goats, wildlife and birds can all be affected.

I completely understand that balloons are part of celebrations, but please don’t release them. Tie them down, take them home and dispose of them properly.

Because once you’ve let go… you’re no longer responsible for where they end up.

To the person who released these — you probably never thought they’d end up in our field. But they did.

And I’d much rather have a slightly boring party than find one of our animals injured because of something that could so easily have been avoided. 😔

Please think before you let go. 🎈

A few seconds of celebration isn’t worth an animal’s life.

Please share this post to help spread awareness and educate others. ❤️ You never know who might see it before they next decide to let a balloon go.

Is it just me, or has there suddenly been a moment where you look around and realise… summer is nearly over? 🌿

I’m not ready for darker evenings, the mud to return and the leaves to start turning just yet. But at the same time, we do so desperately need the rain! 🌧️

Somehow we’re already creeping towards September, which is a huge change for us here at Lane End Farm, when new horses start arriving. 🐴

It’s definitely that strange time of year where you’re clinging on to summer, while secretly begging for autumn to bring us some much needed wet weather. 🍂🌧️

Because Chloe behaved herself for more than a week, she was allowed a new tool on the farm… enter the Lady hedge cutter. 🌿✂️

Now she’s decided she’s a hedge hairdresser. 😂

Please don’t contact us for your landscaping needs. Qualifications: none. Confidence: questionable. Results: surprisingly good. 🥴

A bit of topping on the steep stuff 🌱🚜

Topping the grass helps keep the field in good shape by tidying up rough growth, controlling weeds and encouraging fresh, more even regrowth. It also helps keep the grass healthy and productive for the months ahead.

Not the easiest field to tackle… especially when you’re pointing the tractor downhill! 😅
