Making organics the norm 🌱
More than 17 years ago, we made the decision to convert all of our vineyards to organic under the programme. Today, organic practices are part of everyday life at Dog Point Vineyard.
Here are just some of the ways we put that philosophy into practice:
🌿 Turning waste into compost - vine prunings and w**ery waste are composted and used as nutrient-rich organic matter across the property.
🌿 Returning nutrients to the vineyard - leachate from the composting process is collected and applied to the vineyards as a natural fertiliser, helping conserve moisture and improve soil structure.
🌿 Planting cover crops — In spring, we sow more than 10 different species, including buckwheat and phacelia, between the vines. Together, they help attract beneficial insects, improve drainage and soil structure, build organic matter, support nitrogen fixation and encourage biodiversity throughout the vineyard.
🌿 Winter grazing - over winter, around 2,500 sheep and 25 steers graze the property, naturally controlling grass and w**d growth while returning organic matter to the soil.
🌿 Encouraging biodiversity - a large area of land at Dog Point is dedicated to pasture, landscaped lawn and pond spaces with native plantings and walkways. Alongside the vineyard inhabitants, you’ll also find beehives, chickens, ducks, a pig and a few friendly dogs roaming the property.
