This year’s “keeper” ermines have officially joined the free range flock for the winter. I waited so long and hatched so many to get to this point. Yet, they’ve honestly not been what I expected at all.

Their personalities are nothing like my blue Ameraucanas. Being a project bird, I ran into sooo many problems with grow outs. There are A LOT of deceitful Ermine breeders out there. And unfortunately, I found that out the hard way. They require genetic testing to ensure they are homozygous blue. Then there’s the recessive white debate. It’s exhausting trying to keep up.

I also haven’t had luck finding a black Ameraucana roo worthy of reproduction. Right now I’m really considering using them to create some pretty olives this spring.

I still think they’re the most beautiful birds. And I have a really good start if I decide to proceed with the variety in 2027. I guess I’m just trying to come to terms with my hopes and expectations vs the reality of this project 😅 Stay tuned to see where things go 🤪
