It was that she came back.

After forgetting her words. After feeling embarrassed. After every reason to stay offstage.

When we hire someone at Footers, we hand them a deck of cards before the interview even starts.

Each card has a core value on it. Honesty. Family. Service. Things like that. We ask them to go through the deck and pick the 3 that actually resonate with them, not the ones they think we want to hear.

Then that’s the whole interview. An hour, just talking through those 3 cards. Why they picked them. When they’ve actually lived them out. Where they’ve fallen short.

We can teach someone how to plate a dish or run a POS system. We can’t teach someone to care. So we spend our time figuring out who they are before we worry about what they can do.

If you’re hiring right now, try asking less about resumes and more about what someone actually believes.
