Starry Skye Farm

Starry Skye Farm Our goal is to breed Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats who are conformationally correct, fill the milk pail, and are a delight to be around.

1. Does this feed pan make my butt look big?
2. Self training to the milk stand.

I just realized I didn’t post pix of our setup at the N Idaho Fair. I did get some safety pins from Melissa to get those sequin curtains going all the way to the floor.

Another highlight from buck collection day. We are very grateful to Melissa Swartz for bringing Starry Skye Cruzr back home for his first collection. He looks great! He had a 68 post thaw! Cruzr's dam is none other than Almar Acres Lucky Penny! His sire is Lil Miss B Haven GC Falco. Hopefully we'll have some Cruzr kids in the spring.

By the way, if you want to make points with Brandon (Blue Mountain Genetics), he has a weakness for apple fritters, Bavarian cream doughnuts, and white mochas.

Buck collection done, whew. Many thanks to Brandon of Blue Mountain Genetics for his patience. Neither the bucks nor the does were very cooperative. CIDRs pulled Sunday night and Monday morning, and still didn’t have a doe come in heat til this morning. But then another doe came in a few hours later (natural heat, she wasn’t CIDR’d), which helped, because the first doe absolutely hated two of the bucks.

Two of the bucks had to jump, I swear, about 20 times before they actually did their business.

:::smacking my head::: I forgot to say a big thank you to 4-H kids Kate Wollaston and Tigan (don’t know last name!) who were super helpful handling goats for Melissa and I ALL day at the North Idaho Fair show!

At the very end of the show, I brought Dovie back to stand for Best Udder in Show but completely forgot that I also had to stand for Best Dairy Herd. Thankfully my friend Marissa had come to watch for a bit so I grabbed her and we ran back to the pens to get the other three does I needed, then had her come in the ring to help hold them. She had a balloon bouncing behind her head tied on her backpack and a kid’s plastic fireman hat clutched in one hand, but dang it, nobody took a picture! It was the most judge Lauren Acton had laughed all day 😂

Another North Idaho Fair ADGA show done, well run as always (thank you Vanessa!). It was HOT Th-Fri-Sat, pretty warm Sunday but I think only 80 compared to the 90s of the previous days. It was so nice seeing all the locals again and meeting some new folks.

Starry Skye Sandbar Willow was first in the March junior class. The juniors mostly placed fairly well, but we had to get out and back in with the next class so quickly I lost track of placings.
Starry Skye Penny Lane scored first yearling milker.
Starry Skye Darjeeling was second two year old, and Starry Skye Enchanted Gold 5th.
Almar Acres Soiled Dove was first 4 year old, and Best Nigerian Udder.

We also placed first in five of the group classes!
