Thank you so much Lily Catherine Pike of Soul Horse Hoofcare LLC for her extremely kind endorsement of Hoof Butter 🖤
I am not one to reccomend products unless I really believe in them, especially publicly. However, I was recently given a free sample of Red Mares Hoof Butter to try and I have to say, I have thus far been impressed! Here are the ways I have experimented with it so far:
- Used on frogs of my PPID horse, Pistol, to help prevent thrush, as he tends to have a weaker immune system from PPID and needs preventative treatments to his frogs sometimes. It has worked very well for this!
- Used to pack into areas of white line separation and WLD in the bars on Maverick’s hinds where I slightly modeled out a couple spots to prevent pressure points that would continue to worsen the separation and lead to more WLD— it’s worked very well so far to protect these areas from further infection.
- Used it on Dixie’s hooves (pictured) to help with the superficial cracking she gets. I think it’s helping!
Now, I am not one to believe in moisturizing hooves with anything other than water being particularly useful, and that’s mostly just useful for your farrier on trim day, lol. However, this is more than a “moisturizer” agent— it actually is made with beeswax which keeps out excess moisture from rainy, muddy or dewy conditions. This helps stop the wet/dry cycle that often leads to more superficial cracks.
Note: Deeper cracks are caused by more serious, hoof balance related issues, or by scarring (such as the lateral crack you can see on Dixie’s left fore here, which is from an old coronary band scar). However, it’s common for horses, particularly those in dewy grass, to get some superficial cracking at the toe that only goes through the very top layer of hoof horn— such as like Dixie here at the tip of her toe. This is great for that. It also appears to be excellent for preventing white line disease and thrush.
I am a believer in it now!
