746 chickens processed yesterday.
3 whole beef finished yesterday.

Sending up a prayer it all fits in the freezers today! Thankfully, every market needs a restock.

I’ll be closing orders Wednesday for our last hatch of the year.

This year has been full of education. Right off the bat we were hit with contamination at the hatchery. We thought it was just an us around here thing, but it was nation wide. Millions of dollars in debt to climb back out of the hole but, thankfully we all made it.

This summers heat was brutal, especially for chickens that have been very selectively bred, for houses for people like Tyson.

So for those of us raising them on pasture, it was horrible. Literally made me wonder if the pasture is the most humane way of doing it.. we will probably skip Aug and Sept next year, the mortality rate really cuts into the profit, making it minimal.

We’ve doubled numbers to try to hold back some for the winter, but this amazing community, has sold us out again! This batch of 700+ that went to the butcher today, are all but sold…. Other than wings, as usual. We have chicks that be moved to pasture this weekend possibly, depending on weather. That batch is sold… so are we crazy for thinking of doing one more after this!?! How’s the El Niño looking?

We’ve raised birds, January through March one time for for FFA show season, learning curves there too, but we made it and birds did better in the cold than the heat- if you can keep water thawed!

Sorry we haven’t posted much the last couple of weeks. It’s been busy. This week we have 700+ birds and 3 whole beef coming to fill the freezer… speaking of freezer, I need a walk in!! Like, yesterday!

Picked up 60 more crates today so we can load chickens to go to the processor next Monday. Yayyy!! Finally more chicken!

The new open trailer will help keep the birds cooler next summer. Last batch was a kick in the gut when we got there and had lost 28 on the way in the stock trailer. It stinks to loose any- but especially when they are full grown- all the time and money invested, dead. I’m over the extreme heat!! This weeks weather has been anticipated for awhile. One more chick day 10-5.. and done for the season. See ya back next March!

HD Farms - Charla N Mark Janoe you out did yourself 1000%. I’ve waited all season to meet you guys, and it finally happened! You’re just as sweet and bubbly as I figured. You have the most polite young man, I know he will be one heck of an entrepreneur.. and Mark, I’m ready for the processing day jokes.

I love this basket, it just got better and better the more I dig though it. I wish we lived closer, but we will have to try to plan a dinner night and Kenny and I come that way.

It was a joy and honor to meet you. Thank you for making the long drive to support us!

Last bit of snack sticks will be headed to Early Bird Market- we will have another batch done after we go to the butcher at the end of the month. What about some smoked pulled chicken? Already seasoned and smoked to perfection. Just heat and eat. Straight from the farm to plate? Let me know what you and your family would like to see!

Numbers- do you track your profit and loss?

Brooder replacement lights, shavings, chicks, water, feed, electricity for freezers and brooder, fuel for tractors to move schooners and get chicken to processor and picked up.

That’s not including infrastructure that needs fixed, maintaining vehicles and trailers.. crates for hauling… that’s just basic.

We come up with $12-$13 a bird from chick to butcher shop. Not including mortality rates!!Then another $11-$13 a bird to be processed.

So I always say we have $25 in a bird- I want $5/bird profit.. makes it $30 a bird.

We average a 5 pound whole carcass before breaking it down into pieces. Backs/neck weigh around a pound each.

So you have to make $30 off 4 pounds of meat, including the wings.

If you’re raising these for business, are your numbers making you a profit?

We want to be able to grow and see others keep doing this-

It has to be profitable to be able to keep running the business.
