38 embryos transferred in 2 days.

A lot of planning, genetics, paperwork, recipients, and behind-the-scenes work… all for the chance to create the next great one.

It might look a little crazy to some people 😅
…but around here, this is how programs move forward.

The future calf crop starts now.

As we wrap up our People Behind Sandrock Ranch series, there’s one more group of people we couldn’t leave out — our village.

The neighbors.
The friends.
The family members.
The people who show up when the phone rings.

The ones who bring trucks and trailers on roundup day.
The ones who help work cattle.
The ones who show up during the sale.
The ones who help when equipment breaks down or there’s simply too much work to get done in one day.

People like John Troy, who Dad calls when he’s hauling cattle long distances — not just for the extra help, but for the company along the way. The neighbors who stop over when something mechanical needs fixed. The family members who drop what they’re doing to lend a hand when things get busy.

Farm life has never been a one-person job, and truthfully, there are days around here where we simply wouldn’t get it all done without the people willing to show up and help us cover a lot of ground.

Sometimes it’s loading cattle.
Sometimes it’s fixing equipment.
Sometimes it’s helping run a sale.
And sometimes it’s just being there when we need an extra set of hands or when cattle are out.

This farm may carry the Sandrock Ranch name, but there are so many people behind the scenes who help make it all work — and we are incredibly grateful for every one of them.

It truly takes a village.

Next up in our People Behind Sandrock Ranch series is our newest hires — the shop cats, also known as the Emotional Support Team.

These furry little supervisors joined the crew this past fall and are currently still “in training.” So far, their strongest skillset seems to be providing emotional support… and honestly, we’re okay with that. 😄

Their long-term job description includes helping keep the mouse population under control in the shop — fingers crossed they eventually take that responsibility seriously.

As for now, most days you can find them cat napping in the warm sunshine on their cat tree inside the shop.

Yes… they have a cat tree in the shop.
Yes… they’re spoiled.
And no… we’re not ashamed of it.

Norman is slowly warming up to the idea of sharing his territory, although we’re pretty sure he’s still undecided about management’s decision to hire additional help.

For now, the Emotional Support Team spends most of their shifts sleeping, looking cute, and boosting morale around the farm — and honestly, that’s a pretty important job too. 🐈☀️🛠️

Next up in our People Behind Sandrock Ranch series is Makena — and tomorrow she turns 21 years old! 🎉

Makena works for the Scales Mound School District, where she cares for and teaches one- and two-year-olds. Anyone who knows Makena knows working with kids comes naturally to her. She has always had a special connection with children, so it was no surprise when she chose a career in childcare. She absolutely adores her kids and is incredibly dedicated to them every day.

Around the farm, Makena jumps in wherever she’s needed. She’s a big help during roundups and when working cattle, helping get cattle in, working around the chute, and keeping track of numbers when calves are being processed. Last weekend she was in charge of recording calf numbers while we worked calves through the chute.

Makena is usually our “last resort” phone call when we need an extra hand — not because she doesn’t want to help, but because she keeps a very busy schedule. And somehow, she still shows up when we need her.

Over the years, Makena was also instrumental in helping watch and entertain Piper while the rest of us were busy working cattle or handling situations where little kids probably didn’t need to be in the middle of the chaos. Piper has grown up with Makena by her side her entire life, and the bond between those two is pretty special.

Makena may not be here every day, but she’s always been an important part of the Sandrock Ranch crew — dependable, caring, and always willing to step in and help when needed.

The gates opened today… and so did everyone’s mood.

After months of late nights, mud, checking cows, feeding calves, and running on caffeine…

The girls are finally headed to grass.

And if you’ve been through calving season—
you know exactly why this feels like a hallelujah moment 🌱🐄

Which do you think she chose?

If you know you know… tomorrow is the day…

We will bring 200 cows with calves to the top of the hill and put them out to pasture in less than 12 hours. It’s takes a whole lot of prayers and ibuprofen.

It takes a village and we are grateful for our village.
