Murphy Family Farmstead

Murphy Family Farmstead Hello! We are Kyle and Mikayla Murphy, native Idahoans with deep farming roots and we are the owners and operators of The Murphy Family Farmstead!

Kyle and I have been working so hard to be self sustainable in our lives, from making our own honey, growing our own vegetables, raising organic farm fresh eggs, and raising and harvesting home grown meat. We want to give you the opportunity to be apart of what our growing farm has to offer! Please be on the lookout for everything we will have available this fall and updates on what we have coming

Warning ⚠️ ⚠️ I know I've posted some bug/spider posts in the past mostly because they peak my curiosity and I hope that others find it interesting as well but this time my spider post comes with a warning. These small black and white spiders are actually baby BLACK WIDOWS! At this size they are mostly harmless because they are both too small to bite and really don't want to unless forced to. The largest one I photographed I actually put my hand directly on her while emptying the water tank!!! At that point I hadn't seen the hour glass but had noticed the interesting white pattern on the top of her butt and that there were 100s of more crawling all over it.
I took a few photos in admiration and then plugged one into Google image search out of curiosity...😱 Turns out those markings are very common on young female black widows. Don't worry I didn't just research myself. This time I reached out to our local extension office and spoke with an entomologist (bug scientist) for confirmation. Fortunately only females are venomus and these were so small that they would have a hard time breaking skin and they were extremely skittish. I was lucky to even get photos. On top of all that when I checked again today (while the weather was overcast) It was as if they had never been the there at all!! P**f gone 🫣These beauties didn't bother me so I won't bother them but it was a very interesting learning experience.

Little story in a slide show... Momma delivered in a very nice nest (dirt hole) she dug that morning that was beautifully done but in direction sunlight 😑 so I present to you a bathtub of very warm baby pigs. They cooled off while mom took a swim and took her sweet time getting to the barn. York/Hamp X York/Hamp/Kune/mangolista.

In just 3 months Rosey Bell our Dwarf (chondro pos) heifer has gotten so large she can only nurse from the back. Her mom Nova is also chondro and half highland so she is low profile and shaggy making nursing a chore for miss Rosey but they make it work. Rosey Bell is from Nova Bell our Mini Hereford/Highland (chondro pos) X Little John our Mini Hereford/Zebu.

Being chondro positive offers smaller, beefier, highly manageable animals, but risks fatal genetic deformities if 2 chondro positive animals are bred together and potential joint issues.
