Watch founders who built their business on their own following for long enough and you start seeing the same move. A few years in, they get quieter.

It usually gets framed as growth, or the brand maturing. Underneath the language is something simpler: being the face of a business every single day, indefinitely, is hard to keep up.

A personal brand the founder can't sustain eventually becomes a business the founder can't sustain. Making sure the business doesn't depend on it completely is the harder, better version of building one.

The ones that stick around have one thing in common: the trust existed before the business did. Paige Lorenze was living the Dairy Boy aesthetic long before it was a brand. Emma Chamberlain built Chamberlain Coffee on a following that trusted her enough to follow her into retail. Hailey Bieber stayed close to Rhode from launch through a billion-dollar sale.⁠
