If digging and dividing your dahlias feels a little intimidating, this class is for you!

Join me at the farm on Sunday, October 25th for a small, hands-on Dahlia Digging + Dividing Workshop. We’ll actually get our hands dirty and walk through the process together—from digging up a clump to finding the eyes, making divisions, and getting your tubers ready for winter storage.

We’ll cover:
• When and how to dig your dahlias
• How to properly lift and clean a clump
• Dahlia tuber anatomy and what you’re looking for
• How to divide a clump into viable tubers
• Winter storage basics
• Plenty of time for questions along the way

This is meant to be a relaxed, hands-on class where you can actually see the process, try it yourself, and hopefully leave feeling much more confident about tackling your own dahlias at home.

You’ll also go home with a simple reference guide and 3 dahlia varieties from the farm to add to your garden next season.

Just another day in the life of a feral farm wife 🤷🏼‍♀️

09/24/2026

Susan and Little Debbie are officially done raising babies for the year and back out on pasture enjoying a little peace and quiet away from the kids. 😂

And apparently, nothing says freedom quite like drinking straight from the hose.

These two crack me up. They’re two of our smartest, most confident sows and have been an absolute joy to have around. Easy to handle, great moms, and always the first to come see what I’m doing—which usually means they’re hoping I brought snacks or turned the hose on.

Little moments like this are honestly one of my favorite parts of raising pigs. Spending time with them, earning their trust, learning their personalities, and just getting to enjoy them being pigs.

We’re keeping three of our sows for breeding, along with Red, and before we know it, we’ll be doing the whole thing all over again next season.

For now though… Susan and Little Debbie are off mom duty. 😂

Anyone else have an animal who thinks drinking from the hose is WAY better than drinking perfectly good water out of a trough?

Do you know where your pork comes from?

Most of us walk into the grocery store, grab a package of pork, and never really think about the animal—or the farming system—behind it.

According to the USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, 75% of the hogs in the United States were on operations with 5,000 or more pigs. Only about 5% were on operations with fewer than 2,000 pigs.

Over the last several decades, pork production in the U.S. has shifted toward fewer, much larger operations.

And while not every large farm raises pigs the same way, much of conventional pork production relies on indoor confinement systems designed to efficiently raise large numbers of animals.

So maybe the question shouldn’t just be:

“How much is pork per pound?”

Maybe we should also be asking:

Where was this pig raised?
How much space did it have?
Could it root, forage and move freely?
What was it fed?
How was it handled?
Who raised it?

There is a story behind every package of meat in the grocery store.

We believe you deserve to know that story.

Know your farmer. Know your food. Know how it was raised.

LOCAL MAKER SPOTLIGHT 🐐🐮🧼

We love filling our farm stand with products made by other small, local businesses, and Wild Highlands Soap + Gift is one of them!

Their handcrafted soaps are made with goat milk + beef tallow, using simple, thoughtfully chosen ingredients with no palm oil or synthetic fragrances. They have a great selection of scents along with unscented options, so there’s a little something for everyone.

We love being able to offer products that fit right in with what our stand is all about — local, handmade, and made with intention.

Next time you stop by for flowers, eggs, or other farm goodies, be sure to check out their soaps too.

Shop local. Support local makers. Know where your products come from.

Have you ever heard the story behind how Desert Edge Flower Farm got started? 🌸

It really goes back to before I ever thought I would have a flower farm.

In 2020, our wedding plans changed quite a bit, like so many did that year. Somewhere along the way, I found myself at a local flower farm picking flowers for our wedding.

That was the first time I really fell in love with dahlias.

Then came 2021. I became a mom for the first time and, somewhere in the middle of navigating that completely new season of life, I planted my first dahlia tubers.

I fell in love with growing them just as much as I had fallen in love with the flowers themselves.

So I kept planting. We cut flowers and shared them with family and friends, and eventually I realized this hobby I loved could become something more.

I had dreamed about having a roadside farm stand for years, and flowers felt like the perfect way to make that happen — a way to bring in a little extra income for our growing household, do something I genuinely loved, and connect with our community.

And from there, Desert Edge Flower Farm grew.

Today, our flowers find their way into homes, weddings and events throughout the Treasure Valley, through our farm stand, local florists, designers and other small businesses.

And one of my favorite parts? Getting to share it with my girls.

I don’t show them much on social media, but they’re every bit a part of what I do here. They’re with me in the flower patch, around while I’m cutting and wrapping bouquets, helping with little jobs, picking flowers and growing up right alongside all of it.

Pretty special to think it all started because I fell in love with a flower and decided to plant a few tubers. 🫶🏻

Hi, I’m Rignee Hamilton. 👋🏻

I figured it was probably time to introduce myself and tell you a little bit about the person behind Desert Edge.

I’m a small-scale flower farmer here in Caldwell, Idaho. Dahlias are what really started all of this for me and are still the heart of what I grow. But like most things around here, one thing has a way of turning into ten. 😂 These days you’ll also find zinnias, sunflowers, eucalyptus, hydrangeas and plenty of other seasonal flowers growing around the farm.

And flowers aren’t the only thing I like to grow.

Garlic has become another one of my favorites. Maybe it’s the Italian in me, but we eat an unreasonable amount of garlic in our house. So growing our own just makes sense. What started as something for our own kitchen has turned into rows of garlic in the garden and another homegrown favorite we get to share through the farm stand.

And then there are the pigs.

We’ve raised pigs for our own freezer for many years, and over the last few years that has grown into breeding our own pigs, raising piglets and offering pork shares to other local families.

So depending on the day, I guess you could call me a flower farmer, pig farmer, garlic farmer… but first and foremost, I’m a wife and a mom to two little girls.

I don’t share my girls very often on social media, but they’re a huge part of everything I do here. They’re in the flower patch with me, around while I’m cutting and wrapping bouquets, helping with little jobs, feeding animals, picking flowers and growing up right alongside all of it.

Outside of the farm, I love horses, hunting, being outside and pretty much everything about the life we’re building here in Idaho.

Most days I’m bouncing between flowers, kids, pigs, gardens, the farm stand and whatever else needs to be done that day. It’s busy, usually a little chaotic, and very rarely glamorous, but I genuinely love what I get to do.

So that’s me.

I’m Rignee — wife, mom, flower grower, garlic grower, pig raiser, and the person behind Desert Edge Flower Farm. 🫶🏻

We should be prepping to plant dahlias over here, but the rain had other plans. So instead, we’re embracing it and finding some joy in puddle jumping! 😄
