Criollo cattle breeds (meaning "of European origin but born in the New World") descended from the earliest cattle brought to the Americas from Spain. They have distinct DNA markers from other cattle breeds, including modern-day Spanish breeds. The Corriente, Florida Cracker, Pineywoods and CTLR Texas Longhorn are all Criollo cattle breeds. In the present-day U.S., those cattle were usually influenced by repeated later imports, so the pure old Spanish lines are mostly preserved today only in a few heritage populations rather than becoming a single standardized U.S. breed.
