Hidden meadows with history way, way up in the mountains … someone had one heck of a life here.

Nice first ride out for the season on Honeysuckle … she’s been purchased by a ranching family near Challis and they’ve asked me to keep her going for the summer. She’s going along wonderfully, will be herding range cattle on her soon.

Big thank you to for being my anchor if I needed one (it was a bit breezy and with creeking trees and snapping branches we could have had a run away, but we didn’t).

There’s a lot that goes into getting cattle out on range:

We got the cows collared with and sorted into groups accustomed which range they’ll end up in.

Next we set up training pastures to make sure the collars are working properly and that the cows understand the sound and shock stimuli.

I spent several days working on getting the computer cows matched up to the actual cows and making the range vences (virtual fences). We had to put 2 collars back on cows that got them stuck on immovable objects and 1 collar that didn’t have a properly functioning battery.

This is the first group heading out to one of our BLM ranges, they’ve never been to this range (mostly due to being a new cow herd) so it was important to get them to one of the several watering areas.

As usual, our excellent crew (mostly of neighbors that love riding) the morning went great.
