We are open seasonally in June for Pick-Your-Own Strawberries and in the Fall for our Fall Farm Store, Pumpkin Patch, and Corn Maze! Our 5th generation fruit & vegetable farm has been based in South Schodack, NY since 1921 when the family moved the farm from East Nassau. Until the mid 1960’s, the farm (then known as Spring Valley Dairy) was a fully-functioning bottling plant, selling dairy product

s directly from the farm, as well as through home delivery as the local milkman! Until recently, the farm continued to milk cows, selling the milk to a local cooperative. While we no longer operate as a milking dairy, we now board cows from another local family farm and continue to raise animals on the land that has been home to cattle for over a century. In the 1970’s, our family began focusing more on produce including our popular you-pick strawberries. In the Fall of 2011, we continued to expand the family business with the grand opening of our Farm Store, Corn Maze, & Pumpkin Patch.

It’s the announcement you’ve all been waiting for: WE ARE NOW OPEN FOR STRAWBERRY PICKING! The crop is great right now so we encourage everyone to get here as soon as possible, because we never know what plans Mother Nature holds for us in the future, and even on a good year, the season only lasts a precious few weeks! Please read through the list below for important information you’ll need for your visit. We can’t wait to see everyone soon ❤️🍓

⏰ HOURS: We are open for picking 7 days a week! We open up at 8am every morning, and close promptly at 5:30pm. (*Please note our change in hours from past years*)

🌧️ WEATHER: We do however shut down the fields in bad weather, so if there is rain in the area, it’s always a good idea to give us a call before you stop by.

💲PRICES: Pick-your-own berries are $4.00 a pound. We have no entry fees and no minimum purchase! Pre-picked berries **when available** are sold by the quart container (about a pound and a half) and are $7.50 a quart. **Call for availability as we may not have pre-picked quarts available every day**

💵 PAYMENT: We ONLY accept CASH OR CHECK! We don’t have electricity at the stand and cell reception can be spotty on the farm, so we cannot take credit/debit cards or Venmo. There are 2 ATMs conveniently located less than a mile and a half away.

👈 WHERE TO GO: Throughout the season we may only have certain sections of the fields open for picking. PLEASE CHECK IN AT OUR STAND *BEFORE* heading out into the field so we can explain to you where to go. We have crops planted in all of the surrounding fields. *Please do not enter or cut through any other fields!*

🧺 CONTAINERS: We encourage bringing your own containers! All containers must be weighed up at our stand *before* heading out to pick. Good ideas to pick in are Tupperwares, mixing bowls, colanders, kid’s play buckets, containers from store-bought lettuce, or even cooking pots! We don’t recommend picking into Ziplocks or other plastic bags, as the berries get squished very easily. We also have quart containers and boxes of various sizes available for purchase at the stand.

🚭 SMOKING, ETC: There is no smoking/alcohol/drugs allowed anywhere on the property.

🐾 PETS: While we love pets and welcome them at our pumpkin patch in the Fall, for food safety reasons we cannot allow them in the strawberry fields.

The first strawberries of the season are now available on our stand!! At the moment our fields are still ripening a little sporadically, so for now our honor-system stand will be operating on a first-come, first-served basis with pre-picked quarts. There are not enough berries ripe yet to open for pick-your-own, but if the nice weather continues, that date will be arriving shortly. Stay tuned for updates here and we will be sure to announce our opening date soon!

Coming soon…but not quite yet! As usual, Mother Nature hasn’t seemed to be able to make up her mind about the weather lately (that’s spring in the Northeast for you!). With the cold weather persisting for awhile and then now followed by all of this heat, our strawberries are just as confused as we are, and are just starting to ripen sporadically. Our plants did great over the winter and are loaded with small green berries, so we are cautiously optimistic that we will have a nice crop (although again, everything depends on the weather going forward, which unfortunately we can’t control). We are finally starting to find some ripe ones here and there, but it will still be a little while before there’s enough ready to pick. Keep your fingers crossed and we will post another update when we have a better idea of an opening date for picking! 🤞🍓

Did you know, unlike apples and other fruit trees that flower all at once, strawberry plants put out several sequential sets of flowers each spring? The first set of flowers are called “king blossoms,” and they will produce the first and largest berries. Each set of flowers that follows (called “secondary,” “tertiary,” etc.) will also form berries, but they will get successively smaller as the plants use up their energy throughout the season. This is why you will see everything from a completely ripe berry, to one on its way, to tiny green berries, to flowers, all on the same plant at the same time! 👉Also, here’s an insider’s tip: the smaller berries are actually often sweeter than the larger ones, because they’ve both spent more time soaking up the warm sun and they take up less water, leading to more concentrated sugars inside!

Happy Spring! Every year as the weather warms up and Florida-grown strawberries show up on sale in the grocery store, we start getting a lot of questions asking how our own berries are doing, so we thought we’d give you an update! 🍓

A few weeks ago, we raked back the straw that covers the strawberry plants over the winter. Our straw is made from the stems of triticale, a cross between wheat and rye that we grow and harvest ourselves (it also makes up the bales we use for seats on the “hay” ride to the pumpkin patch, making it *technically* a straw ride). In the winter the straw acts as a blanket over the dormant strawberry plants and helps prevent them from being affected by frost heave as the ground starts to warm up. Once the plants are uncovered (usually in early April), they start pushing out new growth pretty quickly, with fresh, bright green leaves reaching towards the sun. A few of the plants have just started growing clusters of flower buds, which will open into pretty white flowers in mid-May, then be pollinated by our friendly local bees, and finally by the end of the month the berries will start forming! While our plants are looking great, we won’t have an idea of how this season’s crop will be for several weeks until the berries themselves are growing, but we will continue to post updates as they progress!

TODAY IS THE LAST DAY OF OUR SEASON!

We will be open from 10am until 5:30pm today.
If you haven't had a chance yet to conquer the Corn Maze or want to give it another try, bundle up, pull on your mud boots, and stop in today to give it a shot! The last tickets will be sold/last entry into the maze will be at 4:30pm.

We still have lots of homegrown vegetables in our Farm Store, so be sure to come by today to stock up! Our butternut, acorn, buttercup, and red hubbard squashes and our pie pumpkins should be able to hold until Thanksgiving if stored in a cool, dark spot, or their purée also freezes very well. We also still have homegrown spaghetti and delicata squash, tomatoes, and both sweet and hot peppers, locally grown onions and potatoes, delicious locally produced apple cider and maple syrup, and colorful gourds, straw bales, and pumpkins left to help you decorate for the season!

The continued rain and wind forecasted for the rest of today (Thursday October 30th) means we won’t be able to light up the pumpkins again tonight, but we are planning on trying again for Halloween tomorrow (Friday) night. However our Farm Store is open all day until 6pm if you are still looking for a pumpkin to carve, colorful gourds to decorate with, or homegrown veggies for dinner!

🎃‼️The weather isn’t looking promising for Halloween and the end of the week, so we have decided to move our Annual Pumpkin Lighting up to tomorrow, Wednesday October 29th! As of right now with the forecast being for rain and strong winds on Thursday and Friday, it doesn’t seem like we’ll be able to light them up again those nights, but if that changes we will absolutely post an update. ‼️🎃

In the meantime, if you’re still looking for a pumpkin to carve for Halloween, we’ve got them! The pumpkin patch is closed for the season, but we have a variety of traditional orange and colorful specialty pumpkins available on our Farm Store lawn along with gourds, straw bales, and more to complete your festive display. And don’t forget, the Corn Maze ($6 a person, children 3 and under free) is still open as well!

Last call for the Real Pumpkin Patch! Today and tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday October 25th and 26th, are your last chance to visit our 4 acre patch, full of tons of varieties of pumpkins and gourds of every size, shape, and color. We will of course have a variety of pumpkins available on the lawn at our Farm Store all week, but if you want to find your perfect jackolantern right where it grew, be sure to get here this weekend!

Our Farm Store will be open Saturday and Sunday October 25th and 26th from 10am to 6pm. Hayrides to the Pumpkin Patch (the only way to get there) will run continuously throughout the day from the Store to the Patch, with none leaving the Store past 5:30pm. While our nighttime maze events are finished for the season, the daytime Corn Maze is open every day, with the last tickets sold/entry at 5pm.
