September Rose šŸŒ¹
Her first two weeks of life havenā€™t gone the way they should. After losing her momma at just 2 days old, she was sad, confused, and not feeling so well.

We are working hard to make life without mom as healthy, happy, and normal as we can. And just look at her. šŸ™‚

Sheā€™s doing great on her bottles, and sheā€™s feisty and energetic. Soon sheā€™ll be able to join some cow friends in a small pasture.

This little girl has stolen our hearts.

Recently, it feels like we have been playing a wild game of cattle roulette. Everyday has had some crazy surprise waiting.

In the midst of our chaos we have neglected to share some cuteness! Please enjoy. šŸ˜Š

We lost our matriarch last week. Suddenly and unexpectedly.
We werenā€™t sure we even wanted to post about this, but being real is important to us. And loss is an unfortunate part of this life.
Rose was one of our first two registered Highland cows. And she has been an absolute joy over the years. She lead with grace. She calved with ease, and she was a favorite among all visitors to the ranch.
She leaves us with her newborn heifer calf, September Rose šŸŒ¹.
We will remember our Rose always.

The winning name is ā€¦ PIPPA
Thanks to everyone for your input!

UPDATE: You gave us a LOT of great names to choose from! We have a few favorites. Now weā€™re giving her a little time to show us who she is and which one fits best. šŸ™‚

So no winner just yet, but weā€™re getting closer!

The last six weeks have been a bit insane around here! Our fall calves didnā€™t get the memo about their due dates, and we werenā€™t quite ready for all this cuteness just yet. šŸ˜‚

Meet Parkerā€™s little mini-me. šŸ¤ Iā€™m not sure they come much cuter than this!

Sheā€™s a high-percentage Highland/HighPark heifer, and she needs a name.

ā€œPā€ names preferred for Parkerā€™s girls. Her last heifer already claimed Poppy, so that oneā€™s taken! šŸ˜†

What other P names have you got in mind for her?

The first person to suggest the name we choose gets a free Dakota Ranch Highlands T-shirt! šŸ¤

Unexpected blessings.

Because the little stinker on the left refused to figure life out his first week, Strawberry Jam and her momma were pulled into the maternity ward to keep company and set an example.

As a result, these two became best buddies, and extremely social little calves. The long-term benefits of this early socialization will be huge!

Not exactly how we planned it, but we sure are thankful. šŸ¤

Itā€™s a good thing theyā€™re so cute. This little man was a tough case!

We went from no suck reflex, to finally finding a weak one, but only when blindfolded. Eventually we got him taking a bottle without the blindfold, but then he decided he wanted absolutely nothing to do with Mom.

Gracie was a perfect cow through all of the chaos. She tolerated us helping her calf and milking her daily to keep her supply going. Never once did she give up or lose patience with us, or with him.

And it paid off.

Six LONG days, a whole lot of creativity and patience, and he finally figured it out. Thank goodness.

Gracie is one happy momma! And we are so happy for her. šŸ©µ

We canā€™t do anything about this hotter-than-hot weather, BUT we can share some hunky bull pics. šŸ˜

This handsome guy just came in for weaning. A Golly of Willow Glen x ZR Everett bull. He is every bit as sweet as he is handsome. Weā€™re looking forward to watching him mature over this next year.
