Our sweet Maggie. Our Great Pyrenees is an essential part of our farm. She provides 24/7 protection around here. She defends our animals from all sorts of predators. I’m partial to female dogs. Even when we had Blue Heelers.
Facts about a Great Pyrenees:
1. Scent marking~they patrol the fence line to leave a scent warning
2. The booming bark~use a deep, resonant bark at night to warn predators away
3. Visual posturing ~stand tall and puff out their heavy coats to appear massive
4. Physical force~ fights aggressively to protect their pack of a predator ignores the warning
5. They work without human supervision. They actively patrol the farmer’s perimeter at night to assess threats independently. Then decide when to use a bark versus when to attack a predator.
6. They’re gentle with vulnerable stock. Very gentle with newborns, sick animals & small poultry.
7. Their thick, weather resistant double coat allows them to live comfortably outdoors year-round. It protects them from freezing winter snow and acting as insulation against summer heat.
8. Unlike herding dogs that move livestock around, the Great Pyrenees lives with the herd as a permanent member, defending them against predators such as coyotes, foxes, stray dogs & bobcats.
