It's definitely the busiest time of year. The day started with a calibration check on the milk tank and a state dairy inspection. After that, I moved the heifers to a new pasture. Then, I harrowed two corn fields that will be planted tomorrow or Friday. Lastly, a walk up the hill to move the cow fence so they will have fresh grass after milking in the morning.

It's spring and the hens are celebrating by providing us a bounty of eggs! $5 a dozen, pickup at the farm. 🍳🥚🐓

This is probably the last week that the Derby Village Store will have milk that was bottled in Vermont. The Hood/Booth Brothers plant in Barre closed on April 1 and production was transferred to the plant in Concord, NH. Hood, Booth Brothers, and Food Club products that carried the 50-13 plant code have mostly been replaced by 33-08.

Though I am disappointed by the change, the Concord plant uses a lot of Vermont milk. Just two companies bottle most of the milk that is on store shelves in this area and Hood seems to have better quality than the competitor. I am sad to see the last big Vermont fluid plant close, but I'm glad that it was replaced by the next best thing.

This change didn't affect our milk market at all. We are still Cabot members. It is always interesting to watch the bigger picture.

Maplegrove-B Rio Rita has had six calves and makes her presence known in the bulk tank. She makes it look easy.

The view from the grain bin. The machine below is our feed mixer. It is basically a 600 cubic foot food processor that cuts up round hay bales and mixes all of the other ingredients into a balanced diet for our cows.
