At The Log Haus our philosophy here is
a flower garden isn’t just something beautiful that we look at. It’s something we share.

The flowers feed the bees and butterflies.
The seed heads feed the birds.
The garden becomes habitat instead of decoration.

There is also a long-standing association between goldfinches and good fortune simply because of their brilliant golden coloring. Across various traditions, yellow and gold-colored birds have commonly been associated with happiness, abundance, optimism, prosperity and the return of the sun. Goldfinches in particular have acquired symbolism around joy, vitality, resilience and spiritual renewal.

And there’s an old naturalist’s lore about them, too. Goldfinches have long been appreciated by farmers because they consume enormous quantities of w**d seeds, particularly thistle seeds, meaning goldfinches are a natural check on troublesome w**ds.

I’m very proud my messy fall garden is supporting our local birds with just the right habitat!

I love a good functional item in the garden.

This bright yellow bandana is not only a cute little pop of color—it earns its place in my gardening toolkit. After a good w**ding session, it’s perfect for getting the grit and pollen off my face. Cute AND useful? I’m in.

And after all that digging and w**ding, I absolutely adore my outdoor shower. I love it for the aesthetics, but even more for the function.

But the real workhorse might be the tiniest thing out there… a little bottle of Dawn dish soap.

After gardening, washing exposed skin with soap and water is an important part of cleaning up, especially if you may have brushed against poison ivy or other irritating plants. Dawn is my go-to for cutting through those oily plant residues.

So my gardening philosophy is pretty simple:

Your garden toolkit should be cute, functional, and versatile.

A bright bandana, an outdoor shower, and yes… a tiny bottle of Dawn dish soap.

Because gardening is beautiful, but it’s also dirty work. 😂

What is a rose by any other name… but a w**d? 🌹😉

I read once that a w**d is simply anything growing somewhere it shouldn’t be.

And I think there’s a lot of truth to that.

At The Log Haus, we’re happy to let the garden do its thing. Volunteer flowers, little surprises, plants that pop up where we didn’t put them, we’ll call those happy mistakes.

But when something is crowding out the flowers, stealing nutrients, or simply growing where it has no business being…

YANK IT. 😂

There’s something incredibly satisfying about a good w**ding session. Pulling, clearing, making room for the things we actually planted and love.

Because sometimes gardening is about growing things.

And sometimes… it’s about knowing what needs to go.

The Battle of the Pool Robots.

Every morning they wake up and choose violence.

One robot patrols the depths.
One robot rules the surface.

Current ruler of the Pool, The Bottom Dweller. Dirt Destroyer.

The new kid, Surface Skimmer. Leaf Slayer. Fast. Fearless.

Bottom robot: “This pool ain’t big enough for the both of us.”
Skimmer robot: “Catch me if you can.”

This week was all about turning over the sun-baked earth and preparing the soil for something beautiful. It’s been a long cold spring in Pennsylvania, and it’s been very hard waiting on that last frost date! There’s something special about scattering seeds saved from last year’s flowers, a reminder that every season leaves something behind for the next one to grow.

Now the hill is freshly tilled, the seeds are tucked into the warm ground, and the sprinkler is hard at work helping nature do the rest. Here’s hoping for another summer full of zinnias, blooms, bees, and bouquets from The Log Haus.
