I had the extreme honor and privilege of knowing Lana, and to be in her presence was to know what true grace, strength, wisdom, and passion looked like.
There are people who spend their lives with horses, and then there are those rare souls who seem to understand them on a level the rest of us can only hope to reach. Lana was one of those people.
She wasn’t simply a horse breeder. She was a horsewoman in every sense of the word. Her knowledge, dedication, and love for the horses she brought into this world could be seen in everything she did. Every foal born, every bloodline carefully considered, every life she touched carried a little piece of her with it.
But beyond everything she accomplished, I will remember her.
Her presence. Her wisdom. Her passion. The conversations, the lessons, and the privilege of simply knowing someone whose life left such an undeniable mark on the horse world and on the people fortunate enough to cross her path.
It is difficult to comprehend a world in which Lana is no longer here. There are some people you somehow believe will always be there—fixtures in the world you love—and their absence leaves a silence that feels impossibly loud.
I am profoundly grateful that I had the opportunity to know her, to learn from her, and to stand in the presence of a woman whose legacy will continue long after today.
Because a breeder’s legacy doesn’t end when they leave us. It lives in generations. It runs through pastures and pedigrees, in the horses carrying forward a lifetime of dreams, careful choices, sacrifice, and love.
Rest peacefully, Lana.
The horse world is quieter without you, but it will carry pieces of you forever. 🖤
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Lana Markey, a lifetime member of GLFHA.
Please keep Lana’s family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. May they find comfort in the memories they shared with Lana and in the love and support of their family, friends, and GLFHA community.
She will be deeply missed.❤️
