FLF fans... free chickens

Howdy all. About 3 years ago, I received a flock of chickens for free. They have been great layers, well behaved and easy keepers. Its time for them to move on. 9 hens and a roo. Barred rocks, Auricana, osterlorp. The roo is protective but has never tried to take a poke at the champ.

They are still laying but are older girls. They go together! DM me.

Mixed in below with their, uh, replacements. The other roos are available free too if you can catch them. Its a long story...

She's still ridin' em! The real kicker is that the ostrich are just cool with it.

Baby ostrich ready for new pastures. If you've ever thought about raising a different kind of farm animal, lets talk. I have 1 month old, 3 month old, and adults available.

They must go 2+ groups as they are flock animals.

Hi-Yo Silver! Away! Why yes, that is indeed a chicken riding an ostrich.

Ostrich wranglin' tip # 638: Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

I had a broody chicken lying on some eggs and I took them from her because I didn't want a bunch of roosters, but I was curious, and tossed them in the hatcher that I use for ostrich. And this happened...

Now here's a mystery.

I received this text from my neighbor today. My ostrich pens have fencing that are a foot or so off the ground as a safety measure for me to drop and roll if I get in a bad way with a testosterone filled temperamental thunder chicken. The hens love to lay in a corner and sometimes I dont get the eggs until the next AM. Something is stealing the eggs, apparently intact. This neighbor is probably a half mile away and not all down hill. How the heck?!

A question I am frequently asked is how fast do baby dinosaurs, grow? Well see for yourself! The little guy's on the right were just hatched a few hours ago and the group on the left are approximately 9 days old. Once they take the food and start growing, they'll grow about a foot a month in height alone. Voracious eaters and no leafy green shall be safe again.

Ostrich wranglin tip # 082 - rubbing belly buttons!

Ostrich that are freshly hatched have a belly button that can be a source of infection also known as omphalitus. It is where the remnants of the yolk not fully absorbed and exposed to the air can become infected and that infection travel into the abdominal cavity of the bird. The best preventive medicine includes allowing the bird to hatch naturally without premature assistance followed by an application of a topical antibacterial and antiviral ointment directly to the belly button.

Happy spring FLF fans!

Girls have been a bit slow starting this season, but of course when it pours all day and the mud is thick, there are eggs to collect!

This egg is from a new layer, likely about a 3 yr old hen. Dad roo was not keen on me taking it, but he will respect mah authoritay!

Unfortunately our wet summers in New Hampshire are not conducive for hens hatching their own babies. Early season eggs often do not make it through hatch so this egg will be used for one of our pet projects and new passions in life. Ostrich ice cream!
