Still Life Farm Specializing in year-round farming : local fruit, Winter CSA, Spring CSA We specialize in year-round farming and offer both Winter CSA and Spring CSA programs.

Our small family farm rests on 60 acres that was once the historical Hardwick Poor Farm c.1850. We are working hard to reinvigorate tired pasture land into fruitful orchards, small fruit crops, and vegetable fields. Our produce is available year-round at select farmer’s markets. Our budding fruit business includes a huge array of specialty fruits ranging from heirloom apples and sweet cherries to

currants and black raspberries. At Still Life Farm, we believe in wildlife stewardship and conservation, and as always our conscientious approach to farming assures our customers the highest quality local produce available in Massachusetts! Still Life Farm is part of a larger farm family including Stillman's Farm in New Braintree and Stillman Quality Meats in Hardwick.

PEPPERS. Sweet, hot, and everywhere in between. The peppers have popped and they are unbelievable this year! We grow multiple varieties of sweet and hot peppers and it’s time to stock up. I’m sure you have your favorite ways to use peppers, but here are a few of my favorites:
🌶️ stuffed peppers using our huge sweet standard peppers,
🌶️ fried peppers and corn using a mix of our long, sweet frying varieties and poblanos
🌶️ lunchbox peppers for Kip’s school lunches and snacking
🌶️ jalapeños and poblanos for my salsa verde
🌶️ Nicolazzo sweet Italian for my roasted pepper and tomato soup

“New” toy at the farm - onion topper.

It’s obvious not new, but it’s new to us….an onion topping machine. Usually this is a task that is performed by hand, but the guys are really flying through the process with a little mechanical help.

What’s the process with the onions?

As many of you know, Still Life Farm has a strong focus on winter food (also - btw - friendly reminder to sign up for your winter CSA farm share). Here at the farm we grow a ton of “storage vegetable” or veggies that can be put into cold storage and eaten throughout the winter when outside is too cold to produce food.

Our onion crop gets seeded in February. Transplanted out into the field in May. Grows through July. When the tops of the plants “begin to fall” and tip towards the ground it signals that the growing period is finished and picking begins. After harvesting the onion crop they are taken to our greenhouses and spread out to dry. Drying down the green parts of the onion ensures that disease and pests will not be a problem for storage. After that onions are trimmed - top and root - they are put into 50 pound bags, stacked into wooden apple bins, and placed into storage to feed us into next year!

The new onion topper speeds up one step of the process and gets things done more efficiently on the farm. Glad to add this useful tool to our lineup.

💜 Produce Highlight: BLACKBERRIES! These sweet berry bombs are so juicy and absolutely filled with flavor. This year our crop is a bit limited...remember that week in April where it was 80 degrees for four days and then the low drastically dropped to 25 degrees? Severe temperature swings are one of the farmers worst nightmares. We would not have had any berries this year if it had not been for the big push and extra effort of our farm team adding as much insolating protection as possible before the cold set in. My point being.... GET THE BLACKBERRIES! You won’t regret it!
