We are gearing up for project season and I am assessing my herds for who can stay and who can go!

I have piglets ready to go next week, some for May and I have finished hogs ready to find the perfect freezer camp to call their own. Piglets are Yorkshire/old Spot/Tamworth crosses and are our best growers. 2 piglets are purebred Tamworth.

I have all stages and ages available. Give me a shout if your looking for something specific!

We farmers can dedicate all we are to producing for our communities, but only with the support of the community. Lots of people are quick to praise the work, tell us we are doing God's work, but when we are ready to sell the fruits our labors, if our community isn't there to support us... it really becomes all for naught.

We will be discontinuing corn free/soy free feed for our animals starting next week. We can no longer afford to do so with out a committed customer base. HOWEVER, if 6 or more customers are committed to corn free/soy free and pre order with a deposit ($240 for piglets) ($240 at pre-order + $320 at 12 weeks for finished hogs.) I will make sure I do one litter as soy and corn free. Now for why I don't think I will have anyone committed to corn free/soy free fed pigs this year. In order to pay myself a salary of $400 a month to do all this work, I would still need to charge $420 a piglet and $8.40 a pound live weight for finished hogs. Yet more a pound for suckling or hogettes. I just am not seeing that many customers really wanting corn free/soy free now, at my lower prices. Like a typical rancher, I am MONTHS behind the eight ball on data analysis as costs initially started going up in MAY. With feed bills up over 40% since last year. We need to have the freedom to supplement with high calorie lower costing feed.

We recently added Audrey and family to the farm! She really wanted to be there for the piglets birth but we all missed it! We have 11 new piglets! Graham Cracker is a super star mom and so is Audrey with her two kiddos and Maele, our son in law. We are a full strength team and getting it done like never before. Excited for the future!

So proud of our very own, Konrad Jennings, for raising some real gorgeous hogs! Thank you Gunning Cabin Rentals for bidding on Goldilocks! He will be selling Too Hot and a half hog @ $5.25 a pound live weight. All proceeds will go towards his growing 4H pig project. Him and Mara have been building the breeding program that produced 11 4H market hogs for our Agricultural Expo this weekend. Today 2,004 pounds of live hog that were born and raised on our farm are providing sustenance for our community. We truly feel blessed.

The sawmill has finally produced straight and true boards, consistently, without hours of adjustments between logs! The house floor joists, and some of the interior framing have all been milled! Thank you to all the people who have contributed to making this mill work. My dad is a major rock star and worked a solid 10 hour day today milling. Paul and I couldn't be more happy. Frontier cannot and won't ever make right their lack of accountability and support, but I am so glad our machine is finally going to earn it's keep! Frontier Sawmills

🌲 A New Name, the Same Heart

We’re changing our name!

Our original name, Ildsjel, meant a great deal to us. In Norwegian, it translates to “fire soul”—a beautiful word that describes someone who inspires and uplifts others. That spirit is still very much a part of who we are and what we’re building. But we’ve come to realize that the name, as meaningful as it was, was hard for most people to say or remember. So, with a little sadness but a lot of hope, we’re making a change.

Our new name, Rogue Spruce Farm, reflects both where we are and who we are becoming. We’ve planted a young Sitka spruce on the farm—our own “rogue” tree—that we’ll nurture into something strong, singular, and rooted, just like this place and this dream. It’s a symbol of our journey: unpredictable, resilient, and full of heart.

This past year has stretched us. We've made our share of mistakes, learned hard lessons, and been humbled by the sheer scale of our own ambitions. But even through the struggle, life has taken hold. The farm is bursting with energy, animals, and purpose—and we are deeply proud of the life growing here.

We remain committed to being an inspiring, community-minded family farm, grounded in integrity, learning, and care. Our dreams for agriculture in Alaska are still big—very big—but we’re learning to take each step with more wisdom and more gratitude.

Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, to everyone who has supported us on this journey. We feel your encouragement, and we carry it with us every day.

Count it all joy.
With love and gratitude,
The Rogue Spruce Farm Family

We had identified that we needed to improve the harvest process of our swine last fall. Paul is learning from the masters today and we are excited to bring these skills back to our farm this coming harvest season.
