🤔Why are farm-fresh eggs a little harder to find in October?

Every fall, as the days get shorter, our hens go through a molt. They drop their old feathers (our coop floor looks like a pillow fight happened) and grow a brand-new coat for winter. Growing feathers takes a LOT of protein, so their bodies press pause on laying for a few weeks. It's completely natural, and it's how God designed them to rest and get ready for the cold.

What we do to help:
🍂 Bump up their protein with a higher-protein feed and dried mealworm treats
🍂 Handle them gently — new pin feathers are tender
🍂 Keep the coop draft-free and the straw fresh
🍂 Give them grace (and patience!)

Caring for them well in the quiet seasons is part of why their eggs taste the way they do the rest of the year.

Heads up, friends: With the girls molting, supply is tighter this month. If you want a dozen this Thursday, order early! Orders close Wednesday at 5 PM.

Happy National Farmers Day from our little corner of Lancaster. 🌾🥚🐓

Farming is quiet work. Nobody claps when the waterers get filled at 6 AM or when the coop gets mucked out before church. But Scripture reminds us that faithful, unseen labor is never wasted. God sees the early mornings, and He is the One who gives the increase.

So today, on this holiday Monday, we want to say thank you — to the dairy families, the grain farmers, the orchard keepers, and the backyard-flock mamas all across Fairfield County. You feed this country, and you do it with your hands and your heart.

☀️Saturday/baking day, as promised!🙌 Here's the pumpkin bread that fills our kitchen every October. It makes two loaves: one for your family and one for a neighbor.

Grandma's Farmhouse Pumpkin Bread (2 loaves)🍞
• 4 Marshall Family Farm eggs🥚
• 1 can (15 oz) pumpkin puree
• 1 cup vegetable oil or melted butter
• ⅔ cup water
• 3 cups sugar (plus 2 Tbsp for a crackly top)
• 3½ cups flour
• 2 tsp baking soda, 1½ tsp salt
• 1 tsp each cinnamon and nutmeg, ½ tsp cloves

Heat oven to 350°. Whisk eggs, pumpkin, oil and water. In a second bowl combine dry ingredients, then fold together until just mixed. Divide between two greased 9x5 pans, sprinkle tops with sugar, and bake 55–65 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool 15 minutes before slicing (if you can wait).
