I'll end today with this thought...

Sometimes dairy farms don’t fail because farmers refused to adapt. Sometimes they fail because no amount of efficiency, sacrifice or adaptation can overcome a market in which farmers have almost no bargaining power.

Heifer Cow & Calf Pair..

Sadly we need to part with them, there’ll be no room to shelter them this winter..

Mama is Angus/Jersey cross. She’s only 16mo old. Our Angus bull got to her young as a weaning heifer. She did GREAT carrying her calf, birthing him on her own and continues nursing him all she’s got.. Good mama heifer!

She’s Open as we kept her separate from the bulls to allow her a season to continue to grow. She’s comfortable here since she’s part of our herd, and we are super involved with her calf. We’d put her back with our range herd, but her calf won’t be ready to wean until January. Our winters can be brutal on our ranch, they’d need shelter which we don’t have any extra out of sync with other mamas and calves.

STEER Calf is 3/4 Angus, 1/4 Jersey.. dob 7/24

Which one do you buy, and.. why?

Okay, consumers. Let’s try a little experiment. 😂

These are the SAME gallon of milk.

Same words.
Same product.
Same Grade A milk.

Only the picture changed.

One shows cows being milked on a large rotary.

The other shows cows grazing on green grass with a barn in the background.

Now be honest:

Which gallon are you instinctively reaching for?

There is absolutely nothing inherently wrong with a rotary parlor. It is an efficient way to milk a lot of cows.

But there’s a reason dairy marketing so often shows you the OTHER picture.

Green grass.
Cows grazing.
Red barns.
Rolling countryside.

Those images communicate something to consumers: tradition, farming, wholesomeness, connection to the land.

And here is the question I want people to think about:

If the image of the small, traditional dairy farm helps sell the product, what happens when we allow those farms to disappear?

Because you cannot build an entire marketing identity around the image of a way of farming while simultaneously treating the farms that still look like that as economically expendable.

Look at the two jugs again.

Which one would you buy?

And more importantly…

WHY?
