What a week 🙃

Busy, long, hard, exhausting… honestly, it’s been a little bit of everything. Between sick kids, our sweet lab deciding it was time to have her puppies earlier than expected, and my husband having to head out of town for work, we’ve been running on very little sleep and a whole lot of coffee. Like…a lot.

And as much as we’d love to hit pause on the farm when life gets a little crazy, that’s just not how it works. The animals still need fed, the puppies still need checked on, the cows still need tending, and there’s always something waiting to be done - like fixing the fence one of our heifers tried to break through!

Some days on the farm look picture-perfect. Other days (most days) look like messy hair, tired parents, kids underfoot, puppy laundry, and trying to remember what day it even is. 😂

But I think that’s the part of farming people don’t always see. It’s not just the pretty sunsets and wide-open fields. It’s the early mornings, long days, unexpected surprises, and showing up even when you’re exhausted.

So, here’s to making it through another busy week at Western Ridge Farm. 🤎 We’re tired, but we’re grateful—and tomorrow, we’ll get up and do it all over again. Always.

Sunday at the Ridge

Today’s recipe is one of my favorites: homemade dinner rolls!🥖

These rolls are SO soft, buttery, and pretty. They honestly look like something you’d pick up at the grocery store… except these have a much simpler ingredient list and you made them right in your own kitchen.

Homemade Dinner Rolls

Ingredients
1¼ cups warm milk
2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (or one packet)
2 tablespoons sugar
5 tablespoons melted butter
1 teaspoon salt (omit if using salted butter)
3 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra if needed
Olive oil, for brushing

For the topping:
2 tablespoons melted butter
A little sea salt

Directions:
1. Mix warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon sugar. Let sit for about 5 minutes until foamy (10 minutes max! If it doesn’t foam, toss out and start again).
2. Add remaining sugar, melted butter, and salt. Slowly add the flour, starting with about 1 cup - mix for thirty seconds and add the rest until designed consistency.
3. Mix and knead until you have a soft, slightly sticky dough. If using a stand mixer, let it knead for about 10 minutes.
4. Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–2 hours, until doubled.
5. Divide into 15 pieces and roll into balls. Place in a greased 9x13 pan or baking sheet.
6. Cover and let rise for another hour, until puffy.
7. Bake at 350°F for 20–25 minutes, until golden brown.
8. Brush warm rolls with melted butter and sprinkle with a little sea salt.

🧈 My tips I’ve learned along the way:
• Don’t want to knead by hand? If you have a stand mixer, let your mixer do the work! I let mine knead the dough for about 10 minutes.
• Don’t automatically add all 3 cups of flour. Depending on the day, I sometimes need a little less. Start with less and add more if the dough needs it. You want a soft, slightly sticky dough — not a stiff one.
• Salted butter works just fine! Sometimes that’s what I have on hand, and when I use salted butter, I skip the extra salt in the dough. I just sprinkle a little sea salt over the tops before serving.
• And probably my favorite tip… don’t overthink them! Once you get a feel for what the dough should look and feel like, these are surprisingly easy to make.

They come out golden, fluffy, and buttery every single time. And because they’re homemade without all the preservatives you find in store-bought bread, they’ll keep for about a week — although let’s be honest… let’s see if they actually last that long. 😂

They are THAT good.

Save this one for the next time you want to make homemade bread! 🥖🤎

Just a little roadside stand on a Saturday 🍞

Today was such a fun day with some good friends! We set up our little roadside stand with some baked goodies, fresh produce, yummy coffee, and even a little golfing practice with Raincheck Mobile Golf LLC for good measure ☕️🥕⛳️

Blackberry Brae did such a great job putting this together, and we’re already looking forward to doing it again! This is something we’d love to continue in the future, so be on the lookout for the next roadside stand! 🤍

A huge thank you to Turning Page Photography for capturing some of the sweetest content for us today. And a special shoutout to Made Between Naps Co. for our custom farm stickers! They’re sweet, simple, and absolutely perfect for Western Ridge. 🤎

We’re so excited to share a little more of what we’re growing, baking, and creating here on the farm with our community. 🌱

Confession: I don’t actually like tomatoes. 😂

There. I said it.

I’ll grow them. I’ll baby them. I’ll watch for those first little green tomatoes and get way too excited when they start turning red. I’ll pick them by the basketful and proudly line them up on the kitchen counter…

…but put a plain tomato on my plate? Absolutely not. 😂

UNLESS…

You turn those beautiful garden tomatoes into a big batch of homemade salsa. 🌶️🍅 Then suddenly, I’m interested!

Although, I have to admit… there are a few exceptions. A fresh garden tomato, fresh basil, and mozzarella? PERFECTION 🤌🏼🍅🌿

And my daughter? She’ll eat ketchup by the spoonful if I let her. I DO NOT allow such behavior, but believe me, she would happily make a meal out of it! 😂

There’s just something about growing your own food that makes even the things you don’t necessarily love feel special. Watching a tiny seed turn into a plant loaded with tomatoes is pretty darn satisfying.

So these beauties? They’re headed straight toward salsa destiny! 😌

Now I want to know…

Are you a tomato lover, or do you only eat tomatoes when they’re disguised in something delicious?

And if you grow them, what’s your favorite way to use up a garden full of tomatoes?🍅

Let them get dirty. Let them climb the fence. Let them chase cows, run barefoot, and come inside with grass stains on their knees.

Because childhood doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful. Sometimes the best memories are made outside, with dirt under their feet and a whole lot of freedom.

Sunday at the Ridge | Buy Local

This Sunday at the Ridge, we want to share a local farm with you that we love supporting—Mauk Farms.

One of our favorite things about living in the country is being able to buy food from the people who raise it.

The sausage on our Sunday morning biscuits and gravy comes from Mauk Farms (here in Limestone!) and y’all, their sausage is GOOD. 🤎 They have a great variety of pork products, beef, and chicken. Their beef goes FAST though—if you see it in stock, you better grab it! 😂

We love knowing that when we buy from a local farm, we’re not just buying food. We’re supporting a family, a farm, and people who work hard to provide for their community. And the folks at Mauk Farms are just genuinely great people.

So this Sunday, we’re encouraging you to buy local when you can. Seek out the farms in your community, get to know the people behind your food, and support the families working hard to grow and raise it. 🌾

And around here, our favorite homemade biscuits make the perfect match for that Mauk Farms sausage gravy.

P.S. Our homemade biscuit recipe was the very first recipe we shared here on Sunday at the Ridge!

Sunday at the Ridge:
A Little Coop Care Tip🐔

One simple thing we do to help keep our flock comfortable and our coop fresh is using food-grade diatomaceous earth as part of our regular coop maintenance.

Diatomaceous earth is a natural powder made from fossilized algae. We sprinkle it in areas of the coop where mites and other pests like to hide—around nesting boxes, cracks, corners, and in their dust bathing area.

A few reminders:
•Always use *food-grade* diatomaceous earth
•Avoid creating dust clouds when applying it (you don’t want your chickens or yourself breathing it in).

Little things done consistently can make a big difference when caring for our animals. 🐓

What’s one chicken-keeping tip you swear by?
