Old Wells Farm

Old Wells Farm We are made up of Stowell Watters, Marina Steller, Dylan Watters, and a host of friends, family and animals.

It is our aim to grow the best organic food possible while helping to enrich the town we love so much and the land we were raised on. We are starting small and growing thoughtfully (slowly) with an emphasis on permaculture techniques, diversified vegetable production, flowers, pork, maple syrup, honey, mushrooms, and future endeavors unknown.

A real winter at last, at last! We map the sledding hill with new runs: Airbender (blue square), Lone Highway (green circle), and Doom Shoot (quadruple black diamond). Out in the yurt we boil snow to clean our dishes. The greenhouse is clean and the high tunnels are green with haggard overwinter spinach, choi, kale, and chickweed - all of which needs to be pulled. And so it begins.

But wait first - a baby girl was born! A month ago Alaena and Dylan welcomed Winnifred Benny Watters to the world and to our little farm. She is a dazzling, wonderful burst of light; everyone here is instantly in love with her. I cant think of a better sign to start a farming season than the birth of this beautiful baby girl: The Year of Winnie.

Fresh new year, same old goals: connect to what we eat, connect to where we live, and connect to the people who support us and who we support. Spread love and peace, work hard, read books, drink coffee, and make time to pay full attention to each other here on this green blue planet.

My New Years resolution is to put my phone in a bucket of wet cement, let it harden, and then drop it into Casco Bay. What’s yours?
I personally need to explore ways to detach from this cabal of artificial intelligence, consumerism, politics, and modern American culture before I become fully subsumed by it, before I become its next meal. But at the same time I think I need to directly engage with the big issues of our time. How does one find that balance?
Vegetables are a good start, of course I would say that, this is a CSA email from a farmer. But hear me out: I feel very good about washing, chopping, and cooking vegetables and making something for my family to eat. If I can find it within me to really put the love into it, take my time with it - really like, get into it - it feels restorative, empowering, and deeply satisfying.Β
Growing vegetables allows me to detach from this stuff as well. This is partly because of the soil, sun, and the plants, but also because of the nature of work itself. Task positive behavior, busy hands; it allows me, us, to enter into a sort of engaged mode of being where energy flows and accomplishments stack up. It feels good. I see it in my sons eyes (and his stuck out tongue) as he carefully clicks Legos together.Β Continued in comments…

Our great grandmother Beatrice Wells loved to draw. Here are some of the drawings she did, many sent out as Christmas cards and postcards to family and friends. She lived in this old house, the house we grew up in - this crewneck is an homage to her, to our ancestral home, and to Limington. For sale at the Gorham Farmers Market tomorrow morning.
