A second story began today- one of those little moments that reminds us why we love all things vintage and the stories they carry.
A couple was paging through our collection of antique postcards, a collection gathered over many years by a friendâs mother, when a familiar name caught their eye. The postcard was an ornate, embossed birthday greeting, decorated with purple flowers and gold lettering, mailed in Pennsylvania more than a century ago. On the back, written carefully in flowing script, was a simple birthday message: âWe are all well. We wish you a happy birthdayâŠâ
But it was the name on the address side that stopped them.
They recognized it.
Curious, they called a friend and asked about the name. Before long, the remarkable connection was confirmed: the woman to whom this postcard had been mailed was his great-great-grandmother.
As we all sat there talking about it, we kept coming back to the odds. What were the chances that this little piece of paper- written, stamped, mailed, saved, collected, and passed from hand to hand for more than 100 years would someday be picked up by people who recognized the family name?
There was something wonderfully fitting about knowing what would happen next.
After more than a century away, this birthday postcard was finally going back to the family it had originally been intended for.
Some postcards tell a story. Every once in a while, one gets to finish its journey.
