There is something incredibly special about earning the trust of an animal!

Olive doesn’t roll over for belly scratches because she has to, she does it because she wants to. Every little wiggle, every happy stretch and every closed eye is a reminder that trust is built through patience, consistency and letting animals choose the interaction.

Good training is good communication.

Benson wasn't new to hoof care when I visited Barkheimer Barns. The foundation was already there, and the team had put in a lot of great work.

Instead of teaching Benson new behaviors, we focused on making the conversation clearer. We changed the training environment, cleaned up our communication, and gave Benson more consistent information about what we were asking.

Small changes in how we communicate can lead to big changes in behavior.

Huge thanks to the Barkheimer Barns crew for being open to trying a different approach and constantly looking for ways to improve. That's what makes great trainers—not having all the answers, but always being willing to learn.

The goal isn't to control the animal. The goal is to communicate so clearly that the right choice becomes the easy choice.

When we’re working with animals as intelligent as our giraffes, every member of our team needs to understand the why behind every cue, every reward and every interaction. That’s why you’ll often see all of us gathered together, watching, learning, asking questions and practicing as a team.

💛 Meet the newest little member of the Barkheimer Barns family! 💛

Ms. Daisy, our sweet mini donkey, welcomed the cutest little baby and we are completely in love! 🫏✨

The best part? Daisy is proud to show off her little one during your private tour…but she does have one condition. 😄

Admission fee (according to Ms. Daisy): 🥬 One piece of lettuce per pet 🤣

Share a piece of the lettuce guests are provided on their tour, earn her approval and you will get the sweetest introduction to her precious baby. We have a feeling this tiny donkey is going to steal a whole lot of hearts. ❤️
