🍂 Fall is in the air at The Rusty Porch. 🍂

As our growing season winds down, it’s time to begin preparing the garden for its next season of rest. We’ll tuck the soil in, let nature do her work, and give the garden time to recharge before another year of blooms.

But the garden isn’t the only one who needs rest. 🌿

Flower farming is a beautiful thing, but it asks a lot of us. This slower season is a chance to catch our breath, recharge, redirect our energy, and dream about what the next season might bring.

There’s something comforting about knowing that rest is part of the growing process. The garden needs it, and so do we. 🤎

Here’s to slowing down, embracing the season we’re in, and looking forward to what will bloom next year. 🌾

Cover the soil, or Mother Nature will do it for you. 🌱

And around here, her choice is cheatgrass. 😅

This area has been a real problem for us, and we’re hoping this is the year we can finally get a handle on it. Instead of leaving bare soil for weeds to move into, we’re putting down a thick layer of mulch to cover and protect the soil.

Then comes the fun part—adding plants that actually belong here. We’ll be planting drought-tolerant and native plants that can handle our high-desert conditions and hopefully require a whole lot less fuss once they’re established.

It’s a process, but we’re learning to work with Mother Nature instead of constantly fighting her. 🌿

There’s a topic that comes up often among flower farmers this time of year: burnout.

The long, hot days. Pulling weeds, watering, battling pests, harvesting… and lately, working through this smoky weather from the fires. It can feel like a job that you can never quite get ahead of.

Some days we question why we’re doing this at all. We cry a little. We feel overwhelmed. We wonder if we should just give up.

And then, somehow, we find ourselves flipping beds, ordering seeds, and preparing for another growing season. 🌱

Maybe that’s part of being a flower farmer. The exhaustion is real, but so is the hope.

Today, it felt good to get one section of the garden ready for some fall planting. One little piece finished. One step toward a new flower season.

And with that comes the anticipation of what next year will bring. 🌸

Maybe we don’t have to have it all figured out. Maybe we just keep planting.
One bed at a time. 🤎

Sometimes inspiration is waiting just around the next bend. 🌿

We took an ATV ride through the Owyhee Mountains this week, and while it’s known as a high desert, beauty is everywhere if you slow down and look. Along the trail we came across breathtaking wildflower prairies that reminded me why I’ve been moving our farm in the direction of incorporating more native plants.

Nature has already created the perfect color palette: the soft silver of prairie sage, the rich purple of lupine, cheerful fleabane, delicate wild buckwheat, prairie mallow, wild geranium, and just a splash of brilliant orange from the Indian paintbrush.

These native landscapes aren’t just beautiful—they’re resilient, support wildlife, and belong here. I can’t wait to bring some of this wild inspiration back to our own little corner of the world.

🌳✨ One of the reasons I started planting oak trees is because they support thousands of species of insects, creating an incredible food source for birds and helping build a healthier ecosystem.

This morning, while taking a closer look at one of my burr oaks, I spotted something exciting—tiny acorns are starting to form! 🌰

It’s amazing to see the rewards of planting for the future and creating habitat right here at The Rusty Porch. I can’t wait to watch this little tree continue to grow and support so much life in the years ahead.

First off, thank you to everyone who came out and supported our Saturday Market! The encouragement, smiling faces, and support from our community were amazing. We truly appreciate each and every one of you.

🎨🇺🇸 Paint & Sip in the in Flower Garden 🇺🇸🎨

Join us on June 5 at 6:00 PM for an evening of creativity, relaxation, and beautiful blooms! We’ll be painting a patriotic-themed masterpiece surrounded by the beauty of the flower garden.

This year we’ll be serving refreshing mocktails instead of w**e. Unfortunately, due to a complaint filed with Southwest District Health, we won’t be offering alcoholic beverages. But don’t worry—we’ll still have plenty of fun, laughter, and creativity to share!

Whether you’re an experienced artist or have never picked up a paintbrush, this event is all about slowing down, enjoying the garden, and creating something special to take home.

My little bee friends are hard at work in the garden, doing their magic on the bread seed poppies. 🐝✨
The blooms may be fading, but in their place come these beautiful and whimsical seed heads — full of texture, character, and so much charm.

One of my favorite reminders that every stage in the garden has its own kind of beauty. 🌿
