"Water softeners waste too much water and salt."

This one has some truth in it — and a lot of outdated context.

Older softeners from 10–20 years ago used time-based regeneration cycles, running whether they needed to or not. They did waste salt and water. That technology is largely obsolete.

Modern demand-initiated softeners — what Purity H2O installs — regenerate based on actual water usage. They track how much water has been treated and only regenerate when the resin is actually exhausted. The result: significantly less salt and water used compared to older units, and far less than the scale damage they prevent.

Here's the math that matters: a water heater operating in hard water uses up to 48% more energy than one on soft water. The water and salt a softener uses in a year costs far less than the energy and appliance wear that hard water causes in the same period.

Chlorine is in almost every city water supply in Polk County. Here's what most people don't know about it.

Chlorine is a disinfectant — it's added to kill bacteria and pathogens in the distribution system. It works. Without it, waterborne illness from municipal systems would be far more common.

But chlorine doesn't disappear when it reaches your tap. It's still there. And when chlorine reacts with naturally occurring organic matter in the water — which is present in virtually every Florida water source — it forms disinfection byproducts (DBPs), including trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids.

These byproducts are regulated. The EPA sets limits. But “within limits” and “not present” are very different statements.

Across Central Florida, both start in the Floridan Aquifer, where groundwater moves through limestone and picks up calcium, magnesium, iron and sulfur along the way. The difference is what happens next. Many city utilities soften and disinfect the water before it reaches your home. A private well delivers it exactly as it came out of the ground.

That's why city customers mostly notice chlorine taste and smell, while well owners fight white scale on the faucets, orange stains in the toilet and that rotten-egg smell in the shower.

This is one of the most understandable assumptions in water — and one of the most consequential to get wrong.

Here's the reality: your water utility treats water at the plant and certifies that it meets federal and state standards at the point of entry into the distribution system. That point is not your tap. It's where the treated water enters the network of pipes that eventually reaches your home.

Between that point and your faucet, the water travels through miles of distribution mains, some of which are decades old. It passes through service lines, valves, meters, and finally your home's internal plumbing. Every segment of that journey is an opportunity for the water to pick up what those pipes have accumulated over time.

Florida is moving toward mandatory well water testing. Here's what that means for Polk County well owners right now — before any law passes.

A proposed 2026 Florida bill would require periodic professional testing for private well owners statewide. It's driven by a simple reality: Florida has over 700,000 private wells, almost none of which have ever been professionally tested, and the state has no system for monitoring what's in them.

In Polk County, private wells draw from an aquifer beneath decades of phosphate mining and agricultural land use. The water table is at a 25-year low. Seasonal runoff patterns are shifting.
