Big Leap Ranch

Big Leap Ranch What a crazy leap of faith we took! Follow our adventures as we build our Homestead Ranch Welcome! So far in our 2nd year, we have added quail and rabbits.

We are city people who decided when the pandemic started that we wanted a different way of life (yes, we are THOSE people LOL). We sold our house in the city and moved out to almost the middle of nowhere in January 2021 to learn how to raise animals for food or who have other "jobs" to do, grow our own vegetables, and enjoy life. In our first year, we added goats (Nigerian Dwarf and Boer), pigs (I

daho Pasture Pigs), turkeys, ducks, geese, chickens, guinea fowl, barn cats, and a couple of livestock guardian puppies (still in training). Hope you enjoy our adventures...and if you have any experience to share, knowledge, ideas or suggestions, we would love to hear them!

One of the most frequent questions we get is “what color are your yolks”? Well, here you go…let them speak for themselves 😁.

The yolk color actually varies by season though…during the winter, they are more pale because the hens aren’t foraging bugs and green grass/weeds.

Come get yours tomorrow at the Larimer County Farmers' Market.

In addition to chicken and duck eggs, we will also have our Idaho Pasture Pig pork, organically fed and corn/soy free whole chickens, and grass fed/finished lamb.

See you tomorrow!

Yesterday our LGD (and puppy mama) Peanut got bit on the nose by a very large rattlesnake (google estimates 5-7’ based on distance between fang punctures) 😞.

Thankfully Mark and the girls were home and promptly recognized what happened and were able to get her to a vet where they gave her anti-venom, pain killers and monitored her blood work. Towards the end of the day, her temp was down, blood pressure had stabilized, and bloodwork was looking stable enough they felt comfortable sending her home for the night for additional monitoring.

Let’s just say we were not prepared for how rough she looked (and pic does not reflect it properly)! Got her home though and she spent the evening sleeping.

This morning she seemed more like herself and ate and drank a bit. When I got home from work this evening I couldn’t believe the change! Swelling was significantly less, energy was more normal and we can’t seem to get enough food for her, etc. prayers answered!

Thank you so much to all who knew what we were dealing with and prayed. .

PS we were really hoping to have rattle snake for dinner, but Mark has not been able to find it again yet
