Update Part 2: We made some big changes in the Rex herd. First off I'd like to state none of this is a attempt to bash anyone or their line this is me being up front, open & honest. I do my best to be as transparent as I possibly can about what genetics I'm aware of that run through our herds, I do some genetic testing but I certainly don't test for everything, UNLESS I see a genetic issue pop up that requires futher testing & the rabbit or line has proven its worth the time, energy & extra expense to test it. We have a standard we set for ourselves when we began our rabbit journey, we believe every breeder has that choice, what standard we go by may not work for every barn nor do we believe we have a right to tell another barn what they should or shouldn't be doing, which in turn we don't think another barn has the right to tell us what standard we should go by. We will not lower our standards to make another breeder feel better about what they choose to do or to lift their ego. To each their own! Some may ask why I felt the need to post this, well for the last few weeks I have received numerous messages, some asking for information or confirmation on a line from another breeder that was assumed to still be in our rabbitry or warnings of hey this has showed up in this line we got from them, has it shown up in it over there? These breeders were not "out to get" anyone, they were concerned, worried about their rabbits & the genetics they were carrying, trust me I know that feeling 1st hand & I am always willing to give my opinion or assist in anyway I can, even if it's just to lend a ear. Some of these breeders have fairly small herds & these type of issues can easily destroy them. But basically after setting ourselves back yet another year & a half with the line we purchased & brought into our barn it proved itself to produce poor quality, low growth rates & then finally when I saw a genetic issue pop up we finally came to our senses & culled that line from our barn. We aren't in this hobby to attempt to make a profit as you can tell from our page, you have never seen us post up a rabbit that can go. Only 1 rabbit ever left this barn from that line, the buyer was notified about what had been found later & they culled a couple of it's kits they had originally thought they would keep, the rabbit itself had actually been purchased by the breeder that the issue came from & I have no knowledge of what has happened to it now. I became aware of the bad genetics back at the beginning of summer, which is when we made the decision to cull all rabbits from our herd that were connected to that line in any way with the exception of 1 doe that we produced who's dam (not from the bad line) had some of the best qualities we've ever seen, but unfortunately the sire was from the line that's been eliminated from this barn. I'm not crazy about the fact that a large amount of my time will be spent working extremely hard to insure the amazing genetics this doe carries will remain with us while weeding out all the bad, but to us it's extremely important that we don't knowing add to the bad genetic gene pool that one of our beloved breeds is struggling so hard with & some new ones we refuse to be apart of allowing into it. Please try to understand if you see some kits from this doe on the show tables next year & inquire about buying any of them & we state we won't have any available for quite a long time, we are not gate keeping! We are being responsible breeders & doing what we feel is best for the breed.
