I’m deeply upset tonight. We were down to just four chickens, so we decided it was time to get everybody safely shut in the coop. We went out there—and not one chicken was in it.

Two were way up high, and our beloved T-Pain (female turkey)was hiding behind the kids’ cottage. I was already worried sick, and seeing them scattered like that left me shaken and in tears.

I don’t know what’s happening out here, but I’m tired of being scared to go check on the animals I love. This has been such a hard stretch at Raymer Ranch. 💔🐔🦃

Raymer Ranch has had a hard couple of weeks. We’ve been losing chickens night after night, and today our beloved Hay Hay was missing. We’re down to just four chickens still roaming around outside their cages.

Then our neighbor texted with another complaint about the goats being in her yard. I know they need to stay where they belong, and we’re working on it—but I honestly don’t know if we’ll ever completely stop those little escape artists. I’d be heartbroken if it came to having to get rid of them.

Tonight, after dark, we went out to lock up the coop and found zero chickens inside. Two were tucked into the goat playhouse, and our sweet T-Pain had bedded down on the ground. We picked her up, got her safely into the coop, and locked it up tight.

Today has just been wild. I’m sad, worried, and feeling pretty defeated that something is still killing our animals. We love these critters, and it’s hard not knowing what to do next.

If you’ve dealt with a predator picking off chickens night after night, what finally worked for you? And please tell me there’s hope for keeping these stubborn goats in their own yard!

Everybody’s posting peaceful fall farm pictures.

Mine comes with a feed bill, somebody hollering, and an animal standing somewhere it has absolutely no business being. 🍂🐐😂

Welcome to October at Raymer Ranch.

We have been eating tomatoes all week thanks to Darlene!
None of it went to waste. The chickens enjoyed the cracked ones. Thank you Darlene for thinking of us!

Today was one of the hardest days we’ve had at Raymer Ranch. 💔

That fox we’ve been trying to catch finally got us.

We lost two of my favorite friendly chickens, two of my laying ducks, and all but one of my adult bantams. We had just moved their coop and hadn’t finished putting hardware cloth around the bottom yet. It only took one opportunity.

If you’ve followed Raymer Ranch for very long, you know this isn’t “just poultry” to me. These animals are part of our family, part of our daily routine, and part of the dream we’ve been building one bird at a time.

Right now, my heart is heavy. I keep looking at the 9 bantam chicks we have left and wondering what to do next. Rebuild? Or walk away from bantams altogether? I honestly don’t know.

But I do know this… farming isn’t just the pretty pictures you see online. It’s joy, heartbreak, learning, and starting over more times than you’d ever imagine.

Thank you for following along through all the highs and the lows. Please keep Raymer Ranch in your thoughts tonight… and if you’ve ever had to rebuild after losing animals to a predator, I’d love to hear your story. Right now, I could use the encouragement. ❤️🐔🦆
