Incredible, 18 years underground! This is asparagus!

Asparagus crowns are the hidden heart of every asparagus plant.

Buried deep underground, these massive root systems can continue producing asparagus for many years, making asparagus one of the most unique permanent crops in agriculture.

While most people only see the green spears above the soil, the crown below keeps storing energy and sending up new asparagus season after season.

Some crowns can grow incredibly large over time, which is something most people never get the chance to see.

Did you know bigger is better for asparagus?

Most people think the skinny asparagus is the most tender, but it’s actually the jumbo asparagus.

The bigger stalks come from the healthiest and strongest part of the plant, making them extra tender, flavorful, and packed with nutrients.

Immigrants Are Essential. And They’re Families.

Please Share.

What people don’t always see is that immigration isn’t just one thing, it has layers. It’s not just a topic you hear about, it’s families, kids, and real life.

There are children going to school worried about what might happen at home, and people just trying to build a better life for themselves and their families.

That’s really what it comes down to, people looking for a better life, like anyone would. When we say immigrants are essential, it’s not only about work, it’s about the people behind it, the families, and the everyday reality they live with.

That’s what makes this closer to all of us than we think.

Transplanting 160,000 onions per acre.

Farming isn’t easy, transplanting 8,000 onions by hand per person, every day, 160,000 onions per acre.

Transplanting gives the crop a head start that direct seeding can’t match.

By planting onions that already have 2 –3 leaves, you’re essentially skipping the most vulnerable early stage, which means more uniform growth, better survival, and a harvest that comes weeks earlier, something that can be critical for market timing and pricing.

But that advantage comes at a cost.
Every plant has to be grown in a nursery first, then handled and placed in the field one by one, which requires a huge amount of skilled labor. 8,000 plants per person per day adds up fast.

Between the extra labor, the greenhouse production, and the handling logistics, transplanting is significantly more expensive than direct seeding, but it’s an investment to gain time, consistency, and a stronger, more reliable crop.

Immigrant Workers Are Essential.

Immigrant farm workers play a vital role in bringing food to our tables. They are often overlooked, yet they perform one of the most important jobs in our food supply chain.

The food you enjoy on your table exists because someone, often unseen, planted and picked it by hand.

These workers are not only laborers, but they are also providers, sustaining families, communities, and the agricultural industry itself.

We owe them more than just a passing acknowledgment, we owe them respect, dignity, and deep gratitude for the hard, honest work they do every single day.

So next time you enjoy a delicious meal, take a moment to thank the farm workers who made it possible.

Please share this to help spread the message and give the recognition farm workers truly deserve.
