Memorial Day Weekend! Let's take a minute to remember why we observe this special day.. Unlike Veterans Day (which honors all who served), Memorial Day specifically focuses on those who made the ultimate sacrifice during their service. It serves as a collective moment for the country to pause, express gratitude, and reflect on the cost of freedom.It originally began as a way to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, wreaths, and flags.The holiday began in the late 1860s following the American Civil War, which claimed more lives than any other conflict in U.S. history. It was originally called Decoration Day, officially proclaimed by General John A. Logan in 1868 to honor Union soldiers.After World War I, the holiday was expanded to honor fallen service members from all American wars, not just the Civil War. Congress declared Memorial Day a national federal holiday in 1971 and moved it to the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend.
