Did a reconnaissance trip to the San Francisco Flower Market earlier this month to learn about the wholesale flower industry! Here were the takeaways:
1) the vast majority of flowers at the market were imported. One of the vendors told me that there used to be more growers at the market but they couldn’t compete with the cheaper flowers being imported in. Now the majority of vendors are importers. The people who make the money are the middle men who transport the flowers thousands of miles between the growers in other countries and the vendors. Local flowers means money goes directly to local people and back into the local economy.
2) we can or already do grow 90% of the flowers I saw at the market on our farm BUT they don’t all grow at the same time because our availability changes with the seasons. It’s the difference between shopping at a farmers market versus the grocery store: you can’t get the same thing year round. If community members want to prioritize local flowers, florists and consumers will have to change expectations and get creative!
3) the flower industry is big! And I have a lot to learn. This season we will continue to offer flowers at farmers markets in Redding and Red Bluff. In the background we will keep working ways to make the local flower option, the accessible, desired option. Thank you to everyone who shows up and supports local!

It’s so lovely to see things growing! Last year our greenhouse really struggled and we have made A LOT of changes. Farming is a constant experiment—it’s one of the best parts and one of the most frustrating, but very exciting when it works! Tomatoes and peppers and flowers coming to a location near you in t-2months!
