🥃 SPIRITS SATURDAY: Maple Moonshine… Made in Northeast Ohio?
If you drive far enough into the countryside of Ashtabula County, down a long driveway and into the woods outside Rome, you’ll find something you probably weren’t expecting:
A maple farm with its own distillery.
🌳🥃 Sap Run Distillery at Stone Maple Farm brings two distinctly American traditions together under one roof — making maple syrup and distilling spirits.
Stone Maple Farm taps its own maple trees and operates a sugarhouse on the property. But sitting alongside the maple operation is Sap Run Distillery, where that maple connection takes a considerably more spirited turn:
100-proof Maple Moonshine.
That’s 50% ABV.
Sap Run has been part of Northeast Ohio’s annual Maple Madness tours, giving visitors an opportunity to walk the property, see tapped trees, learn how maple syrup is produced — and then see what happens when a distillery gets involved.
The Maple Producers of Northeast Ohio has described Sap Run as the only stop on its tour offering Maple Moonshine, making this one of the more unusual intersections of Northeast Ohio agriculture and craft beverages we’ve come across.
And maple isn’t the only flavor getting the moonshine treatment. Sap Run has also produced Strawberry Moonshine, which is listed by OHLQ as an Ohio-produced spirit.
It’s exactly the kind of tiny, off-the-beaten-path producer we hoped to uncover when we started Spirits Saturday.
Not every Northeast Ohio craft beverage story happens inside a polished tasting room.
