It’s that time of year again…Molting season is here! Our feathered friends are shedding old feathers and growing fresh new ones, which means they might look a little… well, rough around the edges.
Don’t worry! It’s all part of the natural process! Molting helps chickens replace worn-out feathers and prepare for the season ahead. Here are some simple ways to help your chickens stay healthy, comfortable, and happy throughout molting season:
1. Increase protein 🥚
Growing new feathers requires plenty of protein. Offer a quality, higher-protein layer or flock feed, like our Feeds Mega Layer Crumble. Also, consider protein-rich treats like mealworms or scrambled eggs in moderation.
2. Keep fresh water available 💧
Feather production and overall health depend on good hydration. Make sure clean, fresh water is always accessible.
3. Give them a stress-free environment 🌿
Molting can be exhausting for chickens. Keep their coop calm and secure, minimize unnecessary handling, and give them plenty of space to rest.
4. Don’t worry about fewer eggs 🥚
Egg production often slows down or temporarily stops during a molt because the chicken's energy is being directed toward growing new feathers. This is usually normal.
5. Avoid handling too much 🤲
New feather growth includes sensitive pin feathers. Be gentle when handling your chickens and avoid unnecessary touching while they're actively growing feathers.
While it’s normal, molting can be an exhausting time for your flock. Their bodies need extra energy and nutrients to produce those new feathers, so a little extra care and attention can go a long way. ❤️🐔
