What if one of dairy farming’s biggest climate challenges could be addressed with a tiny amount of seaweed?

The new PBS series Resolve to Solve with Miles O’Brien kicks off at Straus Dairy Farm, where Miles O'Brien sits down with Albert Straus to explore the potential of red seaweed to dramatically reduce methane emissions from cows.

In 2021, Straus Dairy Farm became the first commercial dairy in the U.S. to test a seaweed feed additive from Blue Ocean Barns. The results were significant, with an average methane reduction of 52% and some cows seeing reductions of more than 80%.

It’s an exciting look at the research, ingenuity and persistence behind a climate solution Albert has been working toward for years.

Farmers markets are one of the few places where a weekly grocery trip can directly strengthen the future of local agriculture.

They give regional farmers and producers a place to meet the people they feed, build lasting support for their businesses, and keep more food dollars close to home. When communities consistently choose food produced nearby, they help create the demand small farmers and local producers need to keep going. That means preserving working farmland, agricultural knowledge, and a regional food system that can continue feeding future generations.

Clear a little room in the freezer for these Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Sandwich Bars.

Our Organic Super Premium Ice Cream is layered between soft, chocolate-studded cookie bars made with King Arthur Baking’s Golden Whole Wheat Flour. Make them ahead, freeze overnight, then slice and finish with sprinkles, cocoa nibs, or sparkling sugar.

The blue bottle on the left features an older Straus design. You can spot the same bottle on our former production line, before we moved to our creamery at Rohnert Park.

It is a rare find, but it shows exactly why returning bottles matters. Each bottle that comes back can be washed, inspected, refilled, and kept in rotation, reducing packaging waste and the need to manufacture more glass.

Please rinse your empty Straus bottles and return them to any store or farmers market that sells our milk and cream. You will receive your $3 deposit back, and the bottle can begin another trip.
